The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which has FDA approval for people 16 and older, has also been authorized for emergency use for children ages 12 to 15, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/comirnaty-and-pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">agency\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A picture of a bus ad saying \u201cKids Have Strokes Too, Know The Warning Signs\u201d has recently gained traction online, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DrSergeTheNutritionScientist\/photos\/a.299774407381409\/845089082849936\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this particular Facebook post<\/a> alleging, \u201cStrokes do not happen in kids! They are conditioning us to believe that this is normal now that they approved the gene therapy on our kids.\u201d The text accompanying the post appears to be referencing COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achievingbeyondbraininjury.com\/post\/pediatric-stroke-awareness-on-the-road\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the ad<\/a> was created by the Canada-based charitable foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achievingbeyondbraininjury.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Achieving Beyond Brain Injury<\/a>. The caption of a photo on the organization\u2019s website showing the same ad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achievingbeyondbraininjury.com\/post\/pediatric-stroke-awareness-on-the-road\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a> the organization put PSAs on the side of some Durham Region Transit buses in May and June to help achieve their goal of \u201cspreading awareness to everyone that Kids have Strokes too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the bus ad is meant to raise awareness about pediatric strokes, there is no indication the campaign has anything to do with COVID-19 vaccines. The ad itself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achievingbeyondbraininjury.com\/post\/pediatric-stroke-awareness-on-the-road\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">does not mention<\/a> COVID-19 vaccines, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achievingbeyondbraininjury.com\/blog-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no blog posts<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/achievingbeyond.braininjury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AbbiScholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/abbifoundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posts<\/a> from the organization link the ad to them. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/07\/20\/fact-check-make-a-wish-foundation-wishes-fully-vaccinated-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Is The Make-A-Wish Foundation Only Granting Wishes To Fully Vaccinated Children?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nadine Vermeulen and Rebecca DiManno established the organization in June 2020, a few years after their sons suffered strokes, to raise awareness about pediatric strokes, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achievingbeyondbraininjury.com\/our-inspiration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Achieving Beyond Brain Injury website<\/a> explains. A pediatric stroke is a \u201crare condition affecting one in every 4,000 newborns and an additional 2,000 older children each year,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/stroke\/pediatric-stroke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to social media claims about the bus ad, Achieving Beyond Brain Injury on Oct. 29 posted a statement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/achievingbeyond.braininjury\/posts\/302122388405830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its Facebook page<\/a> that said the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p>It has been brought to our attention that a photo of our awareness initiative that we created in May 2021 for Pediatric Stroke Awareness month has been taken by some people\/groups and is being shared on social media diverging from its intended purpose. Our charity\u2019s mandate, that was created out of a shared experience of our sons\u2019 fight for their lives, has always been to create much needed awareness of Pediatric Stroke, and to celebrate Pediatric Stroke and Brain Injury Survivors by provided post secondary scholarships. Whilst this image that\u2019s being shared is disheartening to us and all who\u2019ve been affected by pediatric stroke, let\u2019s not allow it to stop us from creating much needed awareness to pediatric stroke and its signs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Common side effects from COVID-19 vaccines include soreness at the injection site, tiredness, headache, chills and nausea, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/expect\/after.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC). There have been some reports of cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/myocarditis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">myocarditis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/pericarditis\/what-is-pericarditis#:~:text=Pericarditis%20is%20inflammation%20of%20the,them%20as%20the%20heart%20beats.https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/pericarditis\/what-is-pericarditis#:~:text=Pericarditis%20is%20inflammation%20of%20the,them%20as%20the%20heart%20beats.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pericarditis<\/a> in children ages 12 to 17 after Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination, but such cases are rare, the CDC states on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/recommendations\/children-teens.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its \u201cCOVID-19 Vaccines for Children and Teens\u201d webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Facebook post making the misleading claim about the bus advertisement also attempts to suggest COVID-19 vaccines are \u201cgene therapy.\u201d The CDC has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previously debunked<\/a> the notion that COVID-19 vaccines alter DNA, noting, \u201cCOVID-19 vaccines do not change or interact with your DNA in any way. Both mRNA and viral vector COVID-19 vaccines deliver instructions (genetic material) to our cells to start building protection against the virus that causes COVID-19.
