He took an official break from power after losing a free election in 1990, but returned to power in 2007 and has refused to yield to free and fair elections since.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Prior to the current election, Nicaraguan state security arrested seven presidential candidates on dubious charges of \u201ctreason,\u201d leaving Ortega to compete only against small, friendly left-wing opposition parties. The Sandinista regime prevented legitimate international actors from observing the election, opting instead for far-left \u201ccompanion\u201d individuals and entities who lauded Sunday\u2019s election as a success for global leftism.<\/p>\n<p>While the free world condemned the elections as a \u201csham,\u201d fellow authoritarians like Venezuelan leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and the Communist Party of Cuba applauded the event.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18650170\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"38\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-1236432618.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-18650170\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-1236432618-1024x677-1.jpg\" alt width=\"990\" height=\"655\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Supporters of Nicaragua\u2019s President Daniel Ortega and vice presidential candidate, his wife, Rosario Murillo, pose with a flag of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) while celebrating after preliminary results showed Ortega is expected to be re-elected. ( OSWALDO RIVAS\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ortega\u2019s rubber-stamp Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), the government agency tasked with overseeing elections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europapress.es\/internacional\/noticia-ortega-obtiene-cerca-75-votos-elecciones-nicaragua-primeros-resultados-20211108101952.html\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;that Ortega had defeated his hand-picked opposition with 75 percent of the vote as of early morning Monday. The closest contender, a candidate representing the small Liberal Constitutionalist Party (PLC), allegedly received 14.4 percent of the vote. The margin is so wide despite it representing a fraction of the alleged total vote that the CSE essentially declared Ortega the winner without counting all the votes, stating it would move on to tally the results of regional races later on Monday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The CSE claimed that 65.3 percent of eligible voters participated in the election, a number hotly contested by human rights groups and eyewitnesses in the country. Open Ballots, an independent organization that deployed anonymous observers to illicitly monitor the vote on Sunday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/america\/america-latina\/2021\/11\/08\/el-consejo-supremo-electoral-de-nicaragua-dio-a-daniel-ortega-como-ganador-del-fraude-comicial-con-la-mitad-de-las-actas-escrutadas\/\">estimated<\/a> based on its operations in Nicaragua that only about 18 percent of voters participated, leaving an overwhelming majority of over 80 percent disenfranchised, likely abstaining in response to the widespread indices of fraud, candidate intimidation, and repression.<\/p>\n<p>The organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/america\/america-latina\/2021\/11\/08\/entre-abstencionismo-y-represion-se-realizo-la-jornada-electoral-en-nicaragua-calificada-de-farsa-que-lleva-a-daniel-ortega-a-reelegirse-otra-vez\/\">reported<\/a> witnessing 200 \u201cacts of violence in the electoral context\u201d on Sunday \u2013 including beatings of independent journalists \u2013 as well as several fraudulent activities such as surrounding voting areas with Sandinista propaganda and Ortega using government vehicles to bus voters to the ballot box. In events where it did not document violence, it noted evidence of violent intimidation, such as the presence of armed socialists, both civilians and state security agents, at voting areas.<\/p>\n<p>Ortega\u2019s regime flooded the streets of major Nicaraguan cities with socialists celebrating their \u201cvictory\u201d preemptively late on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.4973262032086\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Este mismo ambiente de fiesta se repite en diversos puntos de la capital y del pa\u00eds. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Nicaragua?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Nicaragua<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Lwmpp01Lfk\">pic.twitter.com\/Lwmpp01Lfk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Patricia Villegas Marin (@pvillegas_tlSUR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pvillegas_tlSUR\/status\/1457566520347971584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 8, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>International human rights groups and regional leaders have condemned Ortega\u2019s attempt to stage a sham election for months. In May, Luis Almagro, the secretary-general of the OAS, accused Ortega of \u201ca clear intent to consolidate total control of the electoral process through suppression, limitation, and restriction of dissident voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s as if Nicaragua is trying to have the worst election possible,\u201d he <a href=\"http:\/\/france24.com\/es\/am\u00e9rica-latina\/20210513-nicaragua-oea-luis-almagro-critica-elecciones\">lamented<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Nicaragua <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oas.org\/en\/member_states\/default.asp\">remains<\/a> a member of the OAS despite the organization\u2019s charter requiring member states to have democratic governments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michele Bachelet, formerly the socialist president of Chile, condemned Ortega in September, citing that the Sandinista regime had engaged in the mass arrest of dissidents and would-be presidential contenders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween 22 June and 6 September, my Office documented the arbitrary detention of 16 people, including political leaders, human rights defenders, business people, journalists, and peasant and student leaders, in addition to 20 others detained since 28 May,\u201d Bachelet&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/09\/15\/u-n-criticizes-nicaragua-crackdown-political-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the U.N. VTV, the official news network of the socialist regime in Venezuela, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vtv.gob.ve\/200-acompanantes-internacionales-expertos-electorales-periodistas-acreditacion-elecciones-nicaragua\/\">defended<\/a> Ortega\u2019s choice by stating that \u201ccompanions\u201d were necessary to ensure that the CSE would comply with Sandinista demands \u2013 or, as VTV explained it, \u201cdue to the lack of confidence in the impartiality of electoral authorities in that country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VTV highlighted the work of an American \u201ccompanion,\u201d far-leftist&nbsp;Michelle Munjanattu, who said told the Russian propaganda outlet Sputnik that she had come to Nicaragua due to \u201cmany falsehoods circulating in American mass media over the situation in Nicaragua.\u201d Munjanattu\u2019s social media presence largely consists of Sandinista propaganda.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.9873417721519\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nicaragua\u2019s food sovereignty today would not have been possible without the agrarian reform undertaken during the Sandinista Popular Revolution. \u2066<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/friendsatc?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@friendsatc<\/a>\u2069 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lKje7yJGXj\">pic.twitter.com\/lKje7yJGXj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TripleM (@RedImaginings) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RedImaginings\/status\/1456631682312937473?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 5, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Venezuela\u2019s Maduro \u2013 himself the architect of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/10\/16\/venezuela-maduro-sticks-landing-another-fraudulent-election\/\">many<\/a> fraudulent elections since his rise to power in 2013 \u2013 was among the first to congratulate Nicaragua on Sunday\u2019s sham.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI send an embrace of congratulations to the people of Nicaragua, to Commander Daniel Ortega and [wife and co-president] Rosario [Murillo], for the great popular and peaceful participation in elections today [November 7],\u201d Maduro wrote on Twitter. \u201cThe sons and daughters of Sandino voted for peace, stability, and prosperity in their nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"13.057851239669\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Env\u00edo un abrazo de felicitaci\u00f3n al pueblo de Nicaragua, al Comandante Daniel Ortega y a Rosario, por la gran jornada de participaci\u00f3n popular y pac\u00edfica en las elecciones de hoy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/7Nov?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#7Nov<\/a>.
