You know, 750,000-plus Americans dead \u2014 750,000,\u201d Biden said. \u201cAnd so, people are worried. People are also worried about, you know, coming up \u2014 they don\u2019t \u2014 understandably. \u2018Why is the price of \u2014 of agricultural products \u2014 and when I go to the store, why is it higher?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat \u2014 like, for example, if I had \u2014 if we were all going out and having lunch together and I said, \u2018Let\u2019s ask whoever the \u2014 whoever is at the next table, no matter how \u2014 what restaurant we\u2019re in \u2014 have them explain the supply chain to us.\u2019 You think they\u2019d understand what we\u2019re talking about?\u201d Biden continued. \u201cThey\u2019re smart people. But supply chain \u2014 \u2018Well, why is everything backed up?\u2019 Well, it\u2019s backed up because the people who supply the materials that end up being on our kitchen table or in our \u2014 in our fam- \u2014 our life \u2014 guess what? I mean, I\u2019m not saying it\u2019s the worst of every time in American history, but we never faced anything this \u2014 this, sort of, defiant of understanding of what\u2019s going on.And you can understand why people are upset. And I \u2014 whether you have a PhD or you\u2019re \u2014 or you\u2019re working, you know, in a restaurant, it\u2019s confusing. And so, people are understandably worried. They\u2019re worried.And so, all I can say is: What I\u2019m going to try to do is explain to the American people, as best I can \u2014And, by the way, you all write for a living. I haven\u2019t seen any one of you explain the supply chain very well. No, no, I\u2019m not being critical. I\u2019m being deadly earnest. When your editor says, \u201cExplain the supply chain.\u201d Okay? \u201cLots of luck in your senior year,\u201d as my coach used to say. (Laughter.)But \u2014 but I sincerely mean it. This is a confusing time \u2014 a confusing time. Think of all those children \u2014 all those children who may have lost more than a year of education by only being out one semester.Think of all that\u2019s going on, in terms of access to everything from \u2014 when you go back to college, if you\u2019re in college \u2014 you go back to college \u2014 wear \u2014 you have to wear your mask or who\u2019s your roommate. What \u2014 I mean, this is a confusing moment.And it seems to me that my job as the President of the United States is to try to figure out \u2014 myself, as well \u2014 what is most needed to put people at ease and let them know there\u2019s a way through this. There\u2019s a way through this.The world has never been here before. That sounds like hyperbole, but think about it. Think about it. This truly is one of those inflection points in history. All the pieces on the board are moving, both in terms of the \u2014 the relationships among and between nations, as well as the pieces about what employment future people have. How do we do this?And so, this is a confusing time. But I promise \u2014 I promise the American people: I have one focus, \u201cHow do we give you some breathing room? How do we get you to the point where we take pressure off you so you can begin to get back to a degree of normality and we move to a different place?\u201dAnd this time when we move \u2014 and, by the way, everybody internationally uses \u201cBuild Back Better\u201d now. When I used the phrase initially, people looked at me like, \u201cBuild Back Better?\u201dWell, what it means \u2014 we\u2019re the only country in the world, gone through a crisis, to go through a crisis, and come out better than we were be- \u2014 before the crisis occurred. That\u2019s building back better than it was before.And so, this is a process. And I just \u2014 you know, we\u2019re going to see.
