Abortion activists were supposed to sweep Terry McAuliffe back to the governor\u2019s mansion. McAuliffe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/22\/virginia-governors-race-abortion-schools-take-center-stage-in-election-ad-wars-.html\">spent millions<\/a>&nbsp;of dollars on ads blasting Glenn Youngkin for being pro-life and brought in outside speakers, including former President Obama, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/obama-stumps-virginia-candidate-race-seen-referendum-biden-2021-10-23\/\">campaign<\/a>&nbsp;on the issue of abortion. Instead of keeping Virginia blue, these efforts may have propelled Youngkin to victory. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fox-news-voter-analysis-virginia-governors-race\">5%<\/a>&nbsp;of voters who said abortion was their top issue in the 2021 election backed Youngkin by a 12-percentage-point margin.<\/p>\n<p>Some policy analysts seem shocked by how abortion radicalism blew up in McAuliffe\u2019s face, but they shouldn\u2019t be.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kofc.org\/en\/resources\/news-room\/polls\/american-abortion-opinions-remain-consistent.pdf\">More than three quarters<\/a>&nbsp;of the American people support significant restrictions on abortion and are making their voices heard at the polls. Instead of listening to them, McAuliffe pandered to an extreme base that makes up a tiny portion of the electorate.<\/p>\n<p>Protecting the most vulnerable is a winning issue, it should be a bipartisan issue, and Youngkin\u2019s success paves the way for a wave of pro-life candidates in 2022 to win in purple and blue states by calling out the extreme pro-abortion views of their opponents.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, McAuliffe made an intentional, strategic decision to emphasize abortion. He thought he could motivate his base and increase turnout, but most voters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/republicans-should-hammer-democrats-on-abortion\/\">didn\u2019t agree<\/a>&nbsp;with what he was saying.<\/p>\n<p>Virginians had recently experienced the radical extremism of Del. Kathy Tran&nbsp;when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/outrage-after-virginia-abortion-bill-sponsor-admits-pregnancies-could-be-terminated-up-until-birth\">introduced<\/a>&nbsp;a bill allowing abortion until birth.&nbsp;Gov. Ralph Northam, while defending the bill, even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/01\/31\/politics\/ralph-northam-third-trimester-abortion\/index.html\">said<\/a>, \u201cThe infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that\u2019s what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.\u201d The governor seemed to be endorsing infanticide, and even some Democrats who had originally supported the bill&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/dem-co-sponsor-of-late-term-abortion-bill-apologizes-says-she-did-not-read-the-bill\">withdrew<\/a>&nbsp;their support.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of backing away from these radical views, McAuliffe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2021\/09\/terry-mcauliffe-wont-say-whether-hed-veto-radical-abortion-bills\/\">committed to enshrining<\/a>&nbsp;abortion in the state constitution and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsls.com\/news\/politics\/2021\/09\/17\/mcauliffe-youngkin-clash-over-abortion-covid-in-1st-debate\/\">promised<\/a>&nbsp;in a debate to make it easier for doctors to conduct late-term abortions. He has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2019\/apr\/09\/terry-mcauliffe\/mcauliffe-does-full-flop-late-term-abortion-bill\/\">flip-flopped<\/a>&nbsp;on whether he would have vetoed Tran\u2019s bill, but his own words betrayed his support for equivalent measures. A vote for McAuliffe was a vote for four more years of Northam\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n<p>While McAuliffe spread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/09\/14\/mcauliffes-claim-that-glenn-youngkin-wants-ban-abortion\/\">misinformation<\/a>, Youngkin remained consistent throughout the race. He&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/pro-life-group-endorses-youngkin-after-he-says-abortion-ban-virginia-appropriate-1630393\">promised<\/a>&nbsp;to support pro-life laws while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/mcauliffe-warns-against-youngkin-apos-005904235.html\">rebutting<\/a>&nbsp;his opponent\u2019s fear-mongering tactics.<\/p>\n<p>McAuliffe and his campaign missed what had become obvious to many Virginians in recent months: abortion extremism doesn\u2019t sell.
