The group\u2019s poll shows a steep three-year drop in support for boys playing in girls\u2019 sports, and for the ideology\u2019s claim that people\u2019s sense of personal \u201cgender\u201d is unconnected to their biological sex.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOne-third of Americans (36%) believe that these [male] students should be allowed to participate in [female] sporting events,\u201d according to the survey of 5,415 adults, which got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=PRRI+transgender&amp;tbm=nws&amp;sxsrf=AOaemvKCcu_aW8GaKv_zfQHy2Hvr5R5wgQ:1635883100968&amp;source=lnt&amp;tbs=qdr:m&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjb5YG5u_rzAhVirHIEHaM1CSYQpwV6BAgBECM&amp;biw=1443&amp;bih=889&amp;dpr=1.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very little press coverage<\/a>. That is a one-third drop from 2018 when 50 percent of Americans said they were okay with male transgenders playing in girls\u2019 sports.<\/p>\n<p>More fundamentally, the poll showed a two-year, one-third drop in the share of people who believe there are additional genders than male and female. In 2021, only 17 percent of Americans strongly believe there are multiple \u201cgenders,\u201d down from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LGBT-Survey-D.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">24 percent<\/a>&nbsp;in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The polling shift is moving politics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>For example, many state GOP politicians have moved to protect single-sex sports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tag\/transgender-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in many states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even federal GOP politicians have begun arguing against \u201ccrazy messages\u201d in K-12 schools \u2014 as they also try to avoid a backlash from socially liberal donors who want the GOP focused entirely on business priorities.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"11.453257790368\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If Democrats at the local, state, and federal levels want fewer parents concerned parents showing up at school board meetings, the solution is to stop indoctrinating kids with crazy messages on the taxpayers\u2019 dime. Not for the Attorney General to intimidate citizens. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uUjnNXS6Ck\">pic.twitter.com\/uUjnNXS6Ck<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Leader McConnell (@LeaderMcConnell) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeaderMcConnell\/status\/1453870444507959302?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 28, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cReality is winning,\u201d said Terry Schilling, the president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/americanprinciplesproject.org\/about\/staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Principles Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"26\">\n<p>That is the clear message from this [PRRI] poll. Over the last few years, despite relentless propagandizing from the woke-captured media and entertainment industries, public opinion has shifted toward a rejection of the left\u2019s radical gender ideology. A decisive majority continues to hold to the scientifically grounded view that human beings are fundamentally male and female. This is very encouraging news.<\/p>\n<p>Even more remarkably, there has been a significant growth in opposition to attempts to allow biological males to compete in women\u2019s sports. This is clear proof that politics does indeed have an impact on culture.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2019, American Principles Project has been engaged in an effort to make protecting women\u2019s sports an election issue and spur lawmakers to address it legislatively. And in the last two years, nine states have passed laws to defend female athletes while the issue has become a key component of Republican campaigns. There is no doubt that raising political awareness of the danger to women\u2019s sports posed by the woke agenda has won voters over to our side.<\/p>\n<p>We are winning the argument, and we should aim to press our advantage even further with the electoral winds at our back next year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2018\/11\/17\/uk-survey-shows-one-in-seven-people-support-transgender-claim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polls show<\/a> that the transgender claim is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tag\/transgender-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deeply rejected<\/a> by most Americans \u2014 even as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2016\/05\/09\/lynch-on-gender-vs-privacy3823046\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is championed<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/health\/2021\/07\/12\/medical-journal-disregard-parents-who-reject-kids-transgender-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ambitious progressives<\/a> who use social diversity to fracture civic society. This ruthless agenda imposes a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/2021.11.04-170821\/https:\/\/www.economist.com\/united-states\/2021\/11\/06\/portrait-of-a-detransitioner-as-a-young-woman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">huge personal cost<\/a> of near-universal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2019\/09\/06\/survey-transgenders-cut-98-percent-of-romantic-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sexual rejection<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2017\/05\/26\/survey-shows-transgender-seen-unattractive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social isolation<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2019\/11\/26\/transgender-over-26000-women-girls-seek-funds-for-breast-removal-at-gofundme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical traumas<\/a> on the few people who try to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2019\/02\/21\/transgenderism-a-mans-penis-can-be-a-female-penis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">change their sex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Generally, transgender advocates claim that a person\u2019s sense of their male-or-female nature \u2014 their \u201cgender\u201d \u2014 should be culturally and legally more important than the male-or-female nature of their unchangeable biology.<\/p>\n<p>For example, advocates claim that federal law-enforcement agencies must ensure that a man or child who says his or her gender is different from his or her biology should be allowed to use opposite-sex bathrooms. They also demand that law enforcement force other Americans to treat them as the opposite sex in conversations, workplaces, cultural events, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/28\/report-trans-movement-pressuring-lesbians-accept-penis-female-sex-organ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">even in sexual activities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Supreme Court\u2019s liberal wing \u2014 plus one GOP judge \u2014 has partially endorsed this new ideology by reinterpreting workplace civil rights law to declare that employers cannot fire people because they oppose transgender claims.<\/p>\n<p>Progressive Democrats have embraced the ideology despite prior support for women\u2019s rights. This party shift has followed their leaders\u2019 insistence that Americans\u2019 coherent society be changed by pro-diversity policies.<\/p>\n<p>But the PPRI survey shows that the divisive ideology is losing ground, despite much friendly coverage in media and Hollywood.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The greatest shift has occurred among Republicans and independents, the poll said:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p>Support [for ending single-sex sports] has declined drastically among Republicans\u2014by more than two-thirds\u2014since 2018, when 30% supported [transgender] participation. Independent support has declined by one-third, from 46% in 2018, and support among Democrats has declined by 11 percentage points, from 73% in 2018.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Democrats, in contrast, strongly support the elimination of single-sex sports in the name of liberation from all physical or social barriers. For example, 62 percent of Democrats favor allowing boys to play in girls\u2019 games, the report says.<\/p>\n<p>Americans are also more willing to champion the importance of sexual privacy against demands by transgender men for access to women\u2019s bathrooms, changing rooms, and other private spaces. The PRRI survey mischaracterized the pro-privacy policies as \u201crestrictive bathroom policies \u201d when it reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"29\">\n<p>Compared to 2016, support for restrictive bathroom policies is notably higher among Republicans and independents and across a range of demographics, including religious affiliation, race, education, age, and gender. Among partisans, the biggest shift is among Republicans. Republicans have increased 30 percentage points, to 74% support, from 44% in 2016. Independents are also more likely to support this policy today (48%) than they were in 2016 (37%). Democrats have not shifted significantly since 2016 (31% today vs. 27% in 2016).<\/p>\n<p>Other subgroups that show a large increase in support [for sexual privacy] \u2026 include Black Americans (45% vs. 28% in 2016), white Americans (49% vs. 33% in 2016), white Americans without college degrees (55% vs. 36% in 2016), Americans over the age of 65 (51% vs. 32% in 2016), Americans ages 50\u201364 (56% vs. 37% in 2016), men (50% vs. 39% in 2016), and women (44% vs. 31% in 2016). White Americans with college degrees increased in support, but not by as large a margin (39% vs. 31% in 2016).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The public debate is also moving Americans from the \u201cdon\u2019t know\u201d undecided column, the report notes: \u201cThis uneven shift [towards protections] is mostly due to the significant proportion of Americans who say they are unsure what to think about the issue (12% in 2016, 8% 2019, and 2% in 2021).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the poll likely understands public opposition to the aggressive transgender agenda, which now includes increasing demands for lesbians to have sex with men who claim to be women.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the poll\u2019s authors fully accept the transgender language,&nbsp; likely nudging non-political respondents towards their pro-transgender preferences.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the poll does not explore what Americans will do if the courts continue to use \u201ccivil rights\u201d law to dictate the outcome of the transgender debate. The courts\u2019 elite-devised, centrally-directed \u201ccivil rights\u201d rules are intended to prevent Americans from balancing their decent sympathy for transgender activists with the fundamental need to recognize the differences and complementarity of men and women, and to protect their children\u2019s character development and health.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the PRRI ran a similar poll with funding from pro-transgender groups.
