The thought police at the <em>New York Times<\/em> are coming for them.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em> opinion section has run a column advocating for classic rock songs like&nbsp;Don McLean\u2019s \u201cAmerican Pie\u201d to be reconsidered and maybe even \u201ctoppled\u201d&nbsp;like historic Confederate statues, arguing that reevaluating beloved songs will help create a world that is \u201cinclusive and more just.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Other rock singers ripe for cancellation include Eric Clapton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and even Elvis Presley.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18613738\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" readability=\"32\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-84850664-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18613738\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-84850664-scaled.jpg\" alt width=\"2880\" height=\"2564\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Johnny Cash performing on stage at Festival of Country Music (Photo by David Redfern\/Redferns)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jennifer Finney Boylan, who is a male-to-female transgender, laid out the case in the op-ed titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/03\/opinion\/music-pop-culture-justice.html\">Should Classic Rock Songs Be Toppled Like Confederate Statues?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs we take another look at the sins of our historical figures, we\u2019ve also had to take a hard look at our more immediate past and present, including the behavior of the creators of pop culture,\u201d Boylan wrote. \u201cThat reassessment extends now to the people who wrote some of our best-loved songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chief among the candidates for cancellation is \u201cAmerican Pie,\u201d the 1971 classic song by Don McLean.&nbsp;Boylan cited past allegations of domestic violence made against McLean as justification for the song\u2019s cancellation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to live in a world where I can be moved by art and music and literature without having to come up with elaborate apologies for that work or for its creators,\u201d the columnist wrote.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Listen below:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"American Pie\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ngDJIjbAvz4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The op-ed also cited the Rolling Stones\u2019&nbsp;\u201cBrown Sugar,\u201d saying the group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2021\/10\/13\/rolling-stones-cancel-themselves-wont-play-brown-sugar-over-slavery-lyrics-criticism\/\">recent decision to remove the song<\/a> from its U.S. tour set may be insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Stones don\u2019t know why the song has to go, does simply removing it from their tour sheet go far enough?\u201d Boylan wrote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18613994\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" readability=\"32\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-173078011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18613994\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-173078011.jpg\" alt width=\"1920\" height=\"1433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Simone Joyner\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The columnist also put Eric Clapton in the cancel mob\u2019s cross hairs by accusing the rocker of making \u201cracist rants\u201d and of engaging in \u201canti-vaccination activism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to explain why younger versions of ourselves ever thought they were OK in the first place,\u201d Boylan wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe reconsidering those songs, and their artists, can inspire us to think about the future and how to bring about a world that is more inclusive and more just.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Follow David Ng on Twitter&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HeyItsDavidNg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">@HeyItsDavidNg<\/a>.
