He also stressed that China has contributed to the global fight against the COVID-19 [Chinese coronavirus] pandemic with practical actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA total of 65 representatives of WTO members spoke at the conference session of the eighth WTO trade policy review of China. And they made positive comments about China,\u201d Wang Shouwen said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>People\u2019s Daily <\/span><\/i><span>also claimed universal praise for China\u2019s \u201cinternational anti-epidemic cooperation\u201d and China\u2019s support for \u201cmaking an early decision on waiving intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccine.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Later in the article, the Communist newspaper claimed the entire world admires China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a fountain of trade and development opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cThis year marks the 20th anniversary of China\u2019s accession to the WTO. If you look at the timetable for China\u2019s WTO obligations, you can see that we have fully fulfilled our obligations under the WTO as well as our commitments to the organization. And several directors-general of the WTO and the vast majority of WTO members have given full affirmation and wide recognition to our performance in this regard,\u201d Commerce Minister Wang Wentao said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In truth, China\u2019s membership in WTO has been marked by constant complaints about the Communist government\u2019s unfair trade practices and predatory behavior.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Australian government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/australia-accuses-china-of-undermining-world-trade\/\"><span>delivered<\/span><\/a><span> a withering critique three weeks ago, accusing China of \u201cundermining\u201d the WTO.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18606154\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"34\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-51345104.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-18606154\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-51345104-1024x847-1.jpg\" alt width=\"990\" height=\"819\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky (L) exchanges signed bilateral agreements on China\u2019s accession to the World Trade Organization with Chinese Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng (R) 15 November 1999 in Beijing. (STEPHEN SHAVER\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cChina has increasingly tested global trade rules and norms by engaging in practices that are inconsistent with its WTO commitments,\u201d Australia said, supporting the charge with a long list of goods China has restricted for purely political reasons, in defiance of WTO rules, solely because the Chinese regime is furious at Australia for insisting on a thorough investigation of the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Australia also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/china-challenges-australia-anti-dumping-measures-at-wto-govt-2\/\"><span>accuses<\/span><\/a><span> China of abusing its WTO membership to \u201cdump\u201d government-subsidized products into other markets, wrecking local industries. China filed suit at the WTO in June against Australian measures intended to protect local manufacturers from China\u2019s dumping practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The U.S. also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-58991339\"><span>strongly criticized<\/span><\/a><span> China\u2019s trade policies at the October WTO review, accusing it of such banned practices as preferential treatment for state-owned enterprises and inadequate enforcement of intellectual property rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cChina has used the imprimatur of WTO membership to become the WTO\u2019s largest trader, while doubling down on its state-led, non-market approach to trade, to the detriment of workers and businesses in the United States and other countries,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/10\/21\/wto-china-20th-anniversary-trade-policy-516647\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> U.S. charge d\u2019affaires David Bisbee.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Bisbee observed that \u201cexpectations have not been realized\u201d that China would be liberalized by WTO membership, as promised by those who supported its admission 20 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe also cannot ignore reports of China\u2019s use of forced labor in several sectors,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Contrary to Chinese state media\u2019s fantasies of universal praise, almost every other WTO member was critical of China at the October review \u2013 and Bisbee pointed out that Beijing intimidated into silence those who held their tongues.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cIf another WTO member speaks out against or otherwise offends China, China\u2019s response increasingly has been to use its economic clout to pressure the offending country to \u2018correct its mistakes,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18606178\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"36\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-51533834.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-18606178\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-51533834-1024x686-1.jpg\" alt width=\"990\" height=\"663\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Harry Wu the democracy activist and former Chinese political prisoner joined a coalition of advocacy groups 18 November 1999 to announce opposition to the Clinton administration\u2019s World Trade Organization agreement in Washington, DC. Wu holds up a dollar bill to show that the administration is only looking out for the money and not the people of China.(STEPHEN JAFFE\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>China\u2019s abuse of WTO membership is made amusingly obvious by its insistence on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/07\/01\/hayward-china-boasts-economic-might-while-exploiting-developing-nation-status\/\"><span>portraying<\/span><\/a><span> itself as a \u201cdeveloping nation\u201d to collect benefits, while simultaneously bragging that it is now the Number Two economic power in the world and will soon overtake the United States as Number One.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/growing-china-trade-deficits-costs-us-jobs\/#:~:text=Three%2Dfourths%20(75.4%25)%20of,the%20trade%20deficit%20with%20China).\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> by the nonpartisan Economic Policy Institute (EPI) in January 2020 estimated 3.7 million American jobs have been lost due to our swelling trade deficit since China joined the WTO, with the manufacturing sector hit especially hard.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>EPI unambiguously stated China\u2019s entry into the WTO was a major factor in killing those American jobs since it allowed China to flood American markets with \u201cdumped\u201d goods and triggered a wave of offshoring jobs in manufacturing and technology. The authors also cited China\u2019s currency manipulation as harmful to the U.S. economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019ve lost nearly five million manufacturing jobs in the last 20 years. At least half of these job losses are explained by the growth in the China trade deficit,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/30\/china-trade-deficit-has-cost-us-3point7-million-jobs-this-century-epi-says.html\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> EPI director of trade and manufacturing policy research Robert Scott.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Halfway through China\u2019s 20 years of WTO membership, researchers at another nonprofit called the National Bureau of Economic Research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usitc.gov\/research_and_analysis\/documents\/Pierce%20and%20Schott%20-%20The%20Surprisingly%20Swift%20Decline%20of%20U.S.%20Manufacturing%20Employment_0.pdf\"><span>noted<\/span><\/a><span> the \u201csurprisingly swift\u201d decline of American manufacturing jobs and pointed out the effect was especially devastating on low-skilled workers. Those American manufacturers who did not give up entirely and close their factories decided the only way to compete with cheap Chinese labor involved trimming low-skilled positions to run with a smaller highly-skilled staff plus more machines. For those concerned with \u201cincome inequality,\u201d there is little question that China\u2019s entry into the WTO made the problem worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>China used WTO membership as a vehicle to increase its economic clout across the free world, and then weaponized that clout into \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/12\/27\/chinas-sharp-power-cuts-western-societies-australia-america\/\"><span>sharp power<\/span><\/a><span>.\u201d The authoritarian communist regime now routinely uses its economic leverage to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2021\/03\/25\/sharp-power-china-punishes-swedens-hm-for-objecting-to-uyghur-slave-labor\/\"><span>force<\/span><\/a><span> American and European companies to comply with Chinese political directives, such as speech codes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The dismal lesson of the past 20 years is that trade and \u201cengagement\u201d did not liberalize China, as the globalists promised. On the contrary, the free world is growing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2017\/11\/25\/chinas-viral-authoritarianism-infects-west-threatens-enlightenment\/\"><span>more authoritarian<\/span><\/a><span>, adopting Chinese Communist theories about speech and information control with terrifying speed. China\u2019s WTO membership is not solely responsible for this trend, but it certainly contributed to giving China the economic clout it needed to exert its malign influence on everything from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/04\/07\/peter-thiel-big-tech-dont-consider-american-companies\/\"><span>Big Tech<\/span><\/a><span> to American <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/10\/29\/chinas-corporate-allies-are-giving-enes-kanter-the-silent-treatment\/\"><span>sports<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2021\/08\/27\/nolte-china-just-backstabbed-hollywood-and-i-feel-fine\/\"><span>entertainment<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>WTO membership helped China take a commanding position in many of the Western world\u2019s vital supply chains \u2013&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldefensemagazine.org\/articles\/2020\/12\/9\/china-exploiting-supply-chain-vulnerabilities\"><span>including<\/span><\/a><span> those with military and medical applications. Two decades after it joined the WTO, China is close to establishing a new world order in which tyrannical regimes can abuse their citizens as they please and do whatever it takes to stay in power, as long as they honor agreements that benefit China.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2021\/05\/19\/report-chinas-destruction-uyghur-people-first-technology-enabled-genocide\/\"><span>genocide and slavery<\/span><\/a><span> are acceptable under the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s notion of \u201cworld trade.\u201d Globalists assured us in 2001 that Chinese tyranny would dissipate thanks to economic engagement, but today Americans have to check the supply chains of every product they buy to ensure it was not assembled or harvested with forced labor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Implicit in China\u2019s gloating about its 20 years of WTO membership is smug confidence that the global economy has been changed forever, and the meaning of terms like \u201cfree trade\u201d and \u201cmultilateralism\u201d is now dictated by Beijing far more than by Washington, London, or Brussels. The price of those cheap Chinese goods we were promised turned out to be agonizingly high.
