The WSJ estimated that the total payout for settling could run $1 billion or more. Biden dismissed the report on Wednesday, calling it \u201cgarbage\u201d and declaring it is \u201cnot gonna happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"10.95652173913\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Pressed later on whether Biden had been briefed by DOJ on the settlement issue, and whether it was appropriate for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@POTUS<\/a> to weigh in (again) on a pending DOJ matter, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KJP46?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@KJP46<\/a> says \u201che was asked a question and he answered it. That\u2019s not gonna happen.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/08\/ice-detention-decline\/\"><strong>(RELATED: Number Of Detained Illegal Immigrants Declines As ICE Arrests Hardly Anyone)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jean-Pierre suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/29\/biden-admin-rescinds-remain-in-mexico-again-despite-court-ruling\/\">Biden<\/a> was not dismissing the substance of the report, but the dollar figure mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat he was reacting to was the dollar figure that was mentioned \u2026 as press accounts today indicate, there\u2019s been press accounts on this, DOJ made clear to the plaintiffs that the reported figures are higher than anywhere that a settlement can land,\u201d she said, referring any further comments or questions to the DOJ.<\/p>\n<p>The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which represents families in one of the lawsuits according to the WSJ, hit back at Biden\u2019s remarks later Wednesday. ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/aclu-busts-bidens-narrative-on-payments-to-illegals\">suggested<\/a> to Fox News that Biden \u201cmay not have been fully briefed about the actions of his very own Justice Department as it carefully deliberated and considered the crimes committed against thousands of families separated from their children as an intentional governmental policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if he follows through on what he said, the president is abandoning a core campaign promise to do justice for the thousands of separated families,\u201d Romero continued. \u201cWe respectfully remind President Biden that he called these actions \u2018criminal\u2019 in a debate with then-President Trump and campaigned on remedying and rectifying the lawlessness of the Trump administration.
