The longtime sports channel joins NBCSN as the other major network to shut down at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Daily\/Morning-Buzz\/2021\/11\/04\/ESPN-Classic.aspx\">Ourand<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11.470997679814\">\n<p>ESPN has been deemphasizing ESPN Classic for much of the past decade, allowing distributors to drop or put the channel on a tier to make room for college channels like SEC Network, ACC Network and Longhorn Network. Altice dropped it in \u201917.&nbsp;<span id=\"tagged-item-05e1a1c538ee4c22a8f3ce1258eda6c7-DirecTV\" class=\"highlight tagged-item\"><a>DirecTV<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<span id=\"tagged-item-7cdbd5637bc14dfbae38ce34f0eee172-Dish Network\" class=\"highlight tagged-item\"><a>Dish Network<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;started offering it as a VOD service in \u201914. (Photo by Getty Images\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As Breitbart\u2019s Warner Todd Huston <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/sports\/2021\/10\/19\/report-disney-quietly-considering-getting-rid\/\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"24\">\n<p>One problem that Disney has realized is that ESPN charges $10 per cable subscriber every month, and Disney loses money every time someone drops their cable subscription to pick up ESPN+ (at $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year).<\/p>\n<p>Disney is also unhappy that ESPN is contractually obligated for long-term deals with the cable providers.<\/p>\n<p>When all is said and done, ESPN is relatively small potatoes for Disney since the Mouse House had 116 million subscribers as of July 3 while ESPN+ only had 14.9 million.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is the worry that ESPN\u2019s ideas of getting heavily into sports betting are also at odds with the supposedly \u201cfamily-friendly\u201d atmosphere that Disney wants to peddle.
