We are center, if anything, a little center-right country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berman asked Manchin, who has stonewalled President Biden\u2019s \u201cBuild Back Better\u201d program, deeming it too expensive, \u201cAbigail Spanberger, Congresswoman from Virginia, a Democrat, said of Joe Biden, she says, \u2018Nobody elected him to be FDR, they elected him to be normal and stop the chaos.\u2019 What do you think about that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he can do that; I really do,\u201d Manchin answered. \u201cI believe in President Biden. I still do&nbsp;and I will always because he\u2019s a good person. He\u2019s here for the right reason. He really is in government for the right reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just have to work together,\u201d Manchin argued. \u201cWe can\u2019t go too far left. This is not a center-left or a left country. We are center, if anything, center-right country, that\u2019s being&nbsp;shown. And we ought to be able to recognize that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd all of my friends on the left, the progressives or liberals or whatever, I said, I\u2019m not,\u201d he continued. \u201cI always say that I\u2019m a responsible West Virginia Democrat. I\u2019m fiscally responsible and socially compassionate. I think most people in the middle feel that way. But I also empathize with the people on the far left and the far right. That\u2019s aspirational. But come together. Realize what can and can\u2019t be done. Don\u2019t force basically something that\u2019s not going to happen to make people believe it will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s look at the finances, John, inflation,\u201d Manchin suggested. &nbsp;\u201cYou asked about the election? People are scared to death in West Virginia about the high rising cost of gasoline, of food, now of utilities. The basic needs of life is going up and making more of a burden on them. No matter how much money we send out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berman seemingly tried to insinuate the Virginia voters who voted for the GOP were racist, saying, \u201cOne of the issues that seemed to play a large role in Virginia was education and parents\u2019 role in education and in some cases the way that America\u2019s history regarding racism has been taught in those schools. Now you were a former governor. You have dealt with schools directly. I think that basically during the debate and Terry might have, when he said what he said, and it was just taken and they ran with it, you know. We all know that parents must be involved in children\u2019s education. You must be paying attention to what\u2019s going on in the classroom and you must be working with both the school that your children go to, the teachers that they have and your children at home, if you\u2019re involved and you should be. But with that being said, the curriculum is going be set, if everyone agrees, but if they don\u2019t they should speak out. That\u2019s what PTO\u2019s about. Parents\u2019 teacher\u2019s organizations were for that reason and that reason is why they\u2019ve always been involved as far as I can remember in education. When I was governor I always enjoyed having the input of parents and all that and then we have to make decisions. And then you have to explain those decisions, what you\u2019re teaching.\u201cDo you think Democrats are in the wrong place, somehow, on education right now?\u201d Berman asked.\u201cNo \u2026 I hope not,\u201d Manchin answered. \u201c I can tell you that. I still look to the parents to see what they think their children should be, or how they\u2019re reacting back home when they get home from school. And social media\u2019s paid such a part in their life, John, and it\u2019s not been a good part as far as I can see.
