Rand Paul of Kentucky demanded Dr. Anthony Fauci tender his resignation for again refusing to admit his agency funded gain of function research in Wuhan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cYou won\u2019t admit that it\u2019s dangerous, and for that lack of judgment I think it\u2019s time that you resign,\u201d Paul told Fauci at a Senate hearing Thursday morning.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauci said the definition of gain of function is \u201cnebulous\u201d in response to Paul\u2019s questioning.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky demanded Dr. Anthony Fauci&nbsp;resign&nbsp;as head of the National Institutes of Allergies and Infectious Diseases for refusing to admit his agency funded gain of function research in Wuhan prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Paul highlighted during a Senate hearing Thursday morning recent revelations about the NIAID\u2019s activities in Wuhan, notably National Institutes of Health Principal Deputy Director Lawrence Tabak\u2019s Oct. 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/21\/nih-admits-funding-gain-of-function-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> to the nonprofit group EcoHealth Alliance calling out the group for failing to immediately notify the NIAID that it created a lab-generated chimeric coronavirus with the Wuhan Institute of Virology between June 2018 and May 2019 that was more deadly than the natural virus it was crafted from.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo when EcoHealth Alliance took the virus SHC-014 and combined it with WIV1 and caused a recombinant virus that doesn\u2019t exist in nature and made mice sicker \u2014 mice with humanized cells \u2014 you\u2019re saying that\u2019s not gain of function,\u201d Paul asked Fauci during the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey gained in lethality. It\u2019s a new virus. That\u2019s not gain of function?\u201d Paul later asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the definition that is currently operable,\u201d Fauci answered.<\/p>\n<p>Paul said Fauci ought to resign for his lack of judgment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil you accept responsibility, we\u2019re not going to get anywhere close to prevent another lab leak of this dangerous sort of experiment,\u201d Paul said. \u201cYou won\u2019t admit that it\u2019s dangerous, and for that lack of judgment I think it\u2019s time that you resign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fauci said he disagreed with \u201cso many of the things\u201d Paul said in his questioning.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Tabak\u2019s letter,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/fauci-stands-gain-function-research-155500731.html\">Fauci<\/a>&nbsp;and the NIH maintain that the research they funded at the Wuhan Institute of Virology did not involve gain of function research.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci and the NIH also maintain that it is \u201cmolecularly impossible\u201d for the viruses that EcoHealth and the Wuhan Institute of Virology were tinkering with to have turned into the virus that causes COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The infectious disease expert argued during Thursday\u2019s hearing that gain of function \u201cis a very nebulous term,\u201d which prompted Paul to note that NIH <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211019065407\/https:\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/gain-function-research-involving-potential-pandemic-pathogens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">removed<\/a> its definition of gain of function on its public-facing website the same day Tabak sent his letter <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/21\/nih-admits-funding-gain-of-function-research\/\">admitting<\/a> EcoHealth Alliance engaged in gain of function research in Wuhan.<\/p>\n<p>The NIH web page now contains a section containing a definition for \u201cenhanced potential pandemic pathogen (ePPP) research,\u201d which provides more wiggle room for the NIH to fund gain of function research without subjecting it to the P3CO gain of function oversight framework created in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile ePPP research is a type of so called \u2018gain-of-function\u2019 (GOF) research, the vast majority of GOF research does not involve ePPP and falls outside the scope of oversight required for research involving ePPPs,\u201d the new NIH <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/research-involving-potential-pandemic-pathogens\">web page<\/a> states.<\/p>\n<p>Paul accused Fauci of trying to \u201cdefine away\u201d gain of function to the point it doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is terrible. You\u2019re completely trying to escape the idea that we should do something about trying to prevent a pandemic from leaking from a lab,\u201d Paul said. \u201cThe preponderance of evidence now points towards this coming from a lab, and what you\u2019ve done is change the definition on your website to try to cover your ass, basically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what you\u2019ve done. You changed the website to try to have a new definition that doesn\u2019t include the risky research that\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller News Foundation previously reported that the NIAID never subjected EcoHealth\u2019s work with the Wuhan Institute of Virology to the P3CO Review Framework, which was implemented in 2017 to scrutinize gain of function research. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/04\/nih-gain-of-function-anthony-fauci-review-board-wuhan-lab\/\">(RELATED: US Grant To Wuhan Lab To Enhance Bat-Based Coronaviruses Was Never Scrutinized By HHS Review Board, NIH Says)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two subordinates of Fauci raised concerns in May 2016 that taxpayer dollars may be funding gain-of-function experiments on bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but dropped the issue after nonprofit group EcoHealth Alliance downplayed the concerns, according to documents reported by the DCNF Wednesday. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/03\/fauci-nih-ecohealth-peter-daszak-gain-of-function-wuhan-covid-19\/\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Fauci Staffers Flagged Potential Gain-Of-Function Research At Wuhan Lab In 2016, Records Reveal)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rutgers University Professor Richard Ebright railed against the NIAID for taking EcoHealth at face value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NIH, incredibly, accepted EcoHealth\u2019s belief that this work would not be considered gain of function, and accepted EcoHealth\u2019s rationale for this belief, and accepted EcoHealth\u2019s policy-noncompliant proposal for a [10 times] allowance for increased viral growth before stopping work and reporting results,\u201d Ebright previously told the DCNF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NIH, in effect, delegated to EcoHealth Alliance the authority to determine whether its research was, or was not gain of function research subject to the funding pause, the authority to set criteria for the determination, and the authority to over-ride federal policies implemented by the White House in 2014-2017 and by HHS in 2017-present,\u201d Ebright added.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
