That broad strategy was intended to help win a broad swathe of voters, including Latino, black, Asian, and white voters.<\/p>\n<p>Governors have little influence on federal immigration policy, so there was little pressure on Youngkin to take a stand on the border crash or on immigration\u2019s damage to Americans\u2019 wages and housing costs.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the GOP candidate, Ed Gillespie, used immigration to spur the turnout of the GOP base, but he focussed on claims about rising crime from illegal migrants. His establishment-style, don\u2019t-mention-the-money pitch was a two-sided failure: he ignored the voters worried about the costs of migration and he alienated some voters who sympathize with migrants.<\/p>\n<p>Many polls show that Americans want to be sympathetic to migrants but also strongly prefer that companies hire Americans before importing more migrants.<\/p>\n<p>Conflicting public polls have left the public with little idea about Latino support for Youngkin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The October 27-November 3 poll <a href=\"https:\/\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/FNVA-Virginia_as-of-10pm-results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used<\/a> by Fox News showed Youngkin winning a record 55 percent of the Latino vote, which comprised a small but useful five percent of the state-wide electorate. Forty-four percent of Latino voters picked McAuliffe, according to the survey of 2,634 people selected by a polling center at the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>The huge Latino share was touted by the Republican National Committee (RNC): \u201cRepublicans outperformed in virtually every race in every state in every demographic across the country \u2026&nbsp;Fox News Voter Analysis&nbsp;shows that Youngkin won Hispanics and Latinos by a 55%-44%.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Fox News poll was co-managed by the Associated Press, which <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/virginia-election-ap-votecast-survey-75520c5c9a245bee384526abc138a61a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that \u201cYoungkin also appeared to make inroads with Latino voters, who were closely divided between McAuliffe and him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cinroads\u201d comment suggests that the AP analysts doubt the 55 percent to 44 percent numbers reported by their own poll.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> also downplayed the Latino estimate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/behind-the-numbers-of-the-virginia-gubernatorial-election-11635923354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a>, \u201cThe survey also suggests that Latino voters favored Mr. Youngkin over Mr. McAuliffe, though the sample size of the group was much smaller than for white and Black voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>In contrast,&nbsp;CNN\u2019s exit poll of 3,899 respondents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2021\/november\/exit-polls\/virginia\/governor\">reported<\/a> that only 31 percent of Latino voters picked Youngkin, a seven-point drop from former President Donald Trump\u2019s exit poll score in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>CNN\u2019s 2020 exit poll estimated Trump got&nbsp;36 percent of the 2020 Latino vote, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2020\/exit-polls\/president\/virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compared<\/a> to its 2021 estimate of 31 percent for Youngkin.<\/p>\n<p>The same 2021 CNN poll showed the GOP\u2019s candidate for Lt. Governor, Winsome Sears \u2014 a black immigrant from Jamaica \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2021\/november\/exit-polls\/virginia\/lieutenant-governor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">getting <\/a>just 33 percent of the Latino vote to Democratic Hala Ayala\u2019s 66 percent. The GOP\u2019s U.S.-born Latino candidate for attorney general, Jason Miyares, also got just 32 percent of the Latino vote, according to the CNN poll.<\/p>\n<p>CNN explained its poll:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p>Exit polls are surveys of a random sample of voters taken as they leave their polling place on Election Day. Absentee and early voters are represented by either telephone polls or in-person exit polls at early voting locations. Pollsters use the results to assess the makeup and opinions of the electorate.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The true number is likely somewhere in the middle, between CNN\u2019s 31 percent and Fox\u2019s 55 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The GOP\u2019s populist-themed message is gaining ground among Latinos nationwide, as President Joe Biden\u2019s progressive deputies welcome a flood of lower-wage, rent-spiking, non-English-speaking migrants into Americans\u2019 damaged economy and crowded schools.<\/p>\n<p>In Texas, for example, a Republican candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatrickSvitek\/status\/1455766489739399176?s=20\">won<\/a> a safe Latino majority, Democratic-held state seat on November 2.<\/p>\n<p>In New Jersey\u2019s November 2 elections, the GOP <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ejmiller25\/status\/1455958760669728768?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gained<\/a> ground in districts with many Latino voters.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.5957446808511\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So the shifts in New Jersey should be much more concerning to Democrats than the more-or-less uniform swing we saw in Virginia.  Here&#8217;s Passaic County, with precincts aggregated by town\/township.  Biggest swings from 2017 are in heavily Hispanic areas. 1\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aRFDVZn5zr\">pic.twitter.com\/aRFDVZn5zr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sean T at RCP (@SeanTrende) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SeanTrende\/status\/1455957751075573767?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The New Jersey results suggest that \u201cTrump\u2019s \u201920 gains among Hispanic [voters] are potentially sticking. [Vote] swings from 2020 are in working class townships, suggesting continued movement for voters there,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SeanTrende?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polling<\/a> expert Sean Trende. \u201cIf there\u2019s a silver lining for Ds, it\u2019s that the wealthier townships in the northwest didn\u2019t move as much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GOP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/border-gop-lawmakers-dem-leaders-provisions-spending-bill-citing-migrant-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaders<\/a>&nbsp;such as Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), \u201cdon\u2019t want to talk about the immigration in the context of [pocketbook] issues,\u201d said Mark Krikorian, the director of the Center for Immigration Studies. He continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>Focusing just on illegality in the border doesn\u2019t alienate donors as much, but probably does make the message less appealing to Hispanics. If you add the border issues to the [pocketbook] problems that American workers face, you\u2019re going to create some tension with donors but make the message more palatable to Hispanic voters.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Krikorian continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"17\">\n<p>Trump showed that you could be hawkish on immigration and still win over a significant Hispanic support. So if anything, adding a pro-worker aspects to the immigration message rather than focusing just on illegality is likely to be more appealing to Hispanic voters than&nbsp; Trump\u2019s message which was focused mainly on enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>His enforcement focus didn\u2019t turn Hispanics away and may have attracted extra Hispanic votes. So by making the immigration message broader and moving away from a sole, an exclusive focus on arresting law breakers, and talking about kitchen table issues as well, seems to me to make the message more appealing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Many&nbsp;polls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/09\/11\/zuckerbergs-investor-lobby-promises-wages-raises-with-amnesty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">show<\/a>&nbsp;that labor migration is&nbsp;deeply&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tag\/immigration-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unpopular<\/a>&nbsp;because it damages ordinary Americans\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/immigration\/2021\/03\/12\/bloomberg-opts-h1bs-take-two-three-new-tech-jobs-each-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">career<\/a>&nbsp;opportunities, cuts their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/economy\/2021\/04\/08\/elite-academics-hide-amnesty-wage-pain-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wages<\/a>, and raises their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/06\/16\/new-yorks-mayoral-rivals-vow-cheap-housing-plus-more-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rents.<\/a>&nbsp;Migration also curbs Americans\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/economy\/2020\/07\/11\/president-trump-wins-big-on-secret-meatpacking-robots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">productivity<\/a>, shrinks their political&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.breitbart.com+%22john+binder%22+%22demographic+change%22&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS946US946&amp;oq=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.breitbart.com+%22john+binder%22+%22demographic+change%22&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j69i58.10228j0j4&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">clout<\/a>, widens&nbsp;regional wealth&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/08\/13\/zuckerbergs-data-says-amnesty-gives-economic-windfall-coastal-democratic-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gaps<\/a>, and wrecks their democratic, compromise-promoting civic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/search\/?s=%22white+supremacy%22#gsc.tab=0&amp;gsc.q=%22white%20supremacy%22&amp;gsc.page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For many years, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/03\/30\/harvard-harris-poll-5-in-6-americans-want-to-end-immigration-from-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wide<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/immigration\/2021\/01\/14\/poll-americans-want-companies-hire-americans-before-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">variety<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/04\/13\/ipsos-poll-nearly-8-in-10-americans-want-immigration-moratorium-for-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pollsters<\/a>&nbsp;have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2019\/08\/05\/poll-swing-voters-hugely-oppose-2020-democrats-promising-more-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shown<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/immigration\/2020\/04\/24\/poll-trumps-opponents-applaud-his-jobs-for-americans-immigration-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deep<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2017\/01\/31\/poll-shows-public-support-trump-migration-poicy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broad<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/economy\/2020\/05\/28\/business-poll-backfires-shows-public-wants-less-migration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposition<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/11\/16\/exit-polls-3-in-4-voters-want-less-immigration-during-and-after-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">labor migration<\/a>&nbsp;and the inflow of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/economy\/2020\/08\/06\/ipsos-poll-public-opposes-migrant-workers-by-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporary<\/a>&nbsp;contract workers&nbsp;into jobs sought by young U.S. graduates.
