Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously described virtual reality as the \u201cnext major computing platform,\u201d where all our online interaction will play out in a form of virtualized physical presence thanks to VR headsets like the Meta-owned Oculus Quest 2.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_6118734\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"32\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/zuckerberg-oculus-getty.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6118734\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/zuckerberg-oculus-getty.jpg\" alt width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GLENN CHAPMAN\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Facebook has claimed that it has \u201cno current plans\u201d to collect physical motion data such as head tracking and eye movements in an attempt to predict behaviors and target ads. But the Oculus headsets did make it mandatory to log into Facebook to use the devices linking a user\u2019s Oculus data to their Facebook profile. Data is collected about human behavior, which is then used to build profiles on users and automatically prioritize content they are more likely to interact with. Facebook itself proved the effectiveness of this manipulation with an \u201cemotional contagion\u201d experiment it&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/111\/24\/8788.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secretly conducted on users in 2012<\/a>, which showed that changing a user\u2019s feed to show positive or negative content altered the types of content they were likely to post.<\/p>\n<p>This type of algorithmic manipulation forms&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/qv7gbp\/netflixs-the-great-hack-misses-the-big-picture\">the core business model of Facebook<\/a>&nbsp;and countless other apps and social platforms. As one anonymous Silicon Valley data scientist put it in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/feuilleton\/debatten\/the-digital-debate\/shoshana-zuboff-secrets-of-surveillance-capitalism-14103616.html?printPagedArticle=true#pageIndex_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2015 paper by Harvard emeritus Shoshanna Zuboff<\/a>, the goal of algorithmic social platforms like Facebook is \u201cto change people\u2019s actual behavior at scale [\u2026] identify good and bad behaviors, and develop ways to reward the good and punish the bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have found that this algorithmic \u201cnudging\u201d is possible in embodied virtual spaces too, where the collection of intimate data about physical body movements provides new ways to influence human behavior on a large scale. Companies like RealEyes and Affectiva have marketed AI that they&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2019\/aug\/17\/emotion-ai-artificial-intelligence-mood-realeyes-amazon-facebook-emotient\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">say can predict human emotions<\/a>&nbsp;by analyzing body language and facial expressions\u2014a claim that is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2020\/02\/14\/844765\/ai-emotion-recognition-affective-computing-hirevue-regulation-ethics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiercely contested by AI experts<\/a>&nbsp;but being widely deployed anyway. In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25552240\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one notable study<\/a>, researchers determined that AI-controlled digital avatars can be used in virtual spaces to push people into accepting certain political views.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The left-wing outlet Slate also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/11\/02\/slate-mark-zuckerbergs-metaverse-is-just-a-more-efficient-way-to-spy-on-people\/\">recently came to a similar conclusion,<\/a> writing:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"27.269517652909\">\n<p>The metaverse, as it is being marketed, is a broad concept that incorporates a lot of the virtual- and augmented-reality schtick of The Matrix and Minority Report. It\u2019s a new world to explore and a new dimension overlaying the old one. Zuckerberg describes it as \u201ca persistent, synchronous environment\u201d that is \u201cgoing to be accessible across all of our different computing platforms; VR and AR, but also PC, and also mobile devices and game consoles.\u201d It\u2019s clear that Zuckerberg the geek is excited. He sees the metaverse as the next great leap for the internet, analogous to the movement to smartphones and the mobile web. But what\u2019s new here? Don\u2019t we already have Gmail, Fitbit, and Second Life?<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\">One key difference is that this embodied internet entails new sensors monitoring us while we browse, interact, and move about the world\u2014lots of new sensors. Each new generation of Facebook hardware has added more. The heart of all recent versions of the Oculus VR headset is \u201c<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TechAtFacebook\/videos\/527223911184073\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">Oculus Insight<\/a>,\u201d an A.I. tracking system that uses three types of sensors: sensors tracking the orientation and movements of the headset and controllers, four built-in headset cameras mapping out your room, and LEDs in the controllers tracked by the headset, all of which feed Insight to help it \u201ctrack your position and environment in real-time with sub-millimeter precision.\u201d Oculus controllers now contain capacitive sensors which finely detect the movements of your fingers. Oculus also integrates with your phone and other devices for&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oculus.com\/blog\/introducing-supernatural-a-fun-new-way-to-stay-fit-in-vr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">heart-rate&nbsp;<\/a>and fitness tracking. Zuckerberg has hinted at and demoed&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/uploadvr.com\/zuckerberg-quest-3-4-eye-face-tracking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">face- and eye-tracking<\/a>&nbsp;for future Quest\/Cambria models, and recent leaks of the Quest Pro have suggested&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/uploadvr.com\/quest-pro-specs-controllers-leak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">fingerprint sensors<\/a>. In the parallel world of augmented reality,&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2021\/09\/15\/1035785\/why-facebook-ray-ban-stories-metaverse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">Facebook\u2019s new Ray-Ban smart glasses<\/a>&nbsp;contain cameras for taking photos\/videos and a microphone for taking calls.
