Joe Manchin Wednesday doubled down against the inclusion of a paid family leave provision in his party\u2019s spending package after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that it would be incorporated in the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the first I\u2019m hearing of it,\u201d Manchin <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alivitali\/status\/1455927103807967238\/photo\/1\">told reporters<\/a> when asked about Pelosi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.speaker.gov\/newsroom\/11321-3\">letter<\/a> that said they were working to include paid family leave in the package. \u201cThat\u2019s a challenge. Very much of a challenge, and [top Democrats] know how I feel about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchin added that he was not opposed to paid family leave outright, but that he could not support it in the way it was written.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just don\u2019t support \u2018unpaid leave,\u2019\u201d Manchin said. \u201cThat means getting more debt and basically putting more social programs that we can\u2019t pay for \u2026 I wanna support paid leave, I wanna do it in a bipartisan way.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/26\/manchin-democrats-irs-bank-reporting-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Manchin Squashes Democrats\u2019 IRS Bank-Monitoring Proposal)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7314363\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"32\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7314363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the Capitol on Monday. However, she acknowledged that any House-passed bill would have to pass the Senate as well, implicitly calling out Democratic senators\u2019 objections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt had been my intention throughout this process to put on the House Floor and pass a bill that would pass the Senate in the same form,\u201d Pelosi said. \u201cBecause I have been informed by a Senator of opposition to a few of the priorities contained in our bill and because we must have legislation agreed to by the House and the Senate in the final version of the Build Back Better Act that we will send to the President\u2019s desk, we must strive to find common ground in the legislation.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/12\/pelosi-budget-fewer-things-well-democrat-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Pelosi Says Budget Will Do \u2018Fewer Things Well\u2019 As Dems Brace For Cuts)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden originally called for 12 weeks of paid family leave in the budget, but the program was cut by two-thirds after Manchin refused to back its roughly $500 billion cost, and the provision was ultimately scrapped in the White House\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/28\/biden-build-back-better-agenda-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">framework<\/a> released Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>But Pelosi emphasized that the provision was a long-sought goal of many Democrats. \u201c[House Ways and Means Committee] Chairman Richie Neal and the Committee staff have worked on this priority for a long time and were ready,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
