Voters rejected the proposal by a vote margin of 56% to 44%, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/minneapolis-rejects-measure-to-replace-police-11635906041\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the measure would not rid the city of police completely, it would have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox9.com\/news\/heres-what-the-minneapolis-police-ballot-proposal-will-do\">removed<\/a> the minimum staffing requirements for police officers as well as scrapped the city\u2019s chief of police position. Some police officers would have to remain on staff to respond to certain incidents under the measure, though it\u2019s unclear how many police officers would have actually remained.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal split Democrats in the state. Prominent Democratic officials such as U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Governor Tim Walz voiced opposition to the ballot, taking some heat from more progressive members of their party.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/ilhan-omar-keith-ellison-replace-minneapolis-police-department\">endorsed<\/a> the ballot measure and encouraged Minneapolis residents to adopt it. Omar has been hypercritical of the police department in the city, condemning it in the wake of the court-adjudicated murder of George Floyd last year, then more recently over rising crime rates in the city as police retirements <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2021\/1\/15\/22229584\/police-retirements-backlash-chicago-new-york-minneapolis-john-catanzara-fop-michael-lappe#:~:text=In%20Minneapolis%2C%20about%2040%20officers,George%20Floyd%2C%20who%20was%20Black.\">surged<\/a> amount Black Lives Matter protests and the \u201cDefund the Police\u201d movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we must also recognize is that the reduction in policing currently in our city, and the lawlessness that is happening is due to two things,\u201d Omar claimed last month. \u201cOne, the police have chosen to not fulfill their oath of office and to provide the public safety they are owed to the citizens they serve, right? It\u2019s documented. But even before that, it was documented. The Minneapolis Police Department is the most dysfunctional police department, in our state and probably in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second part is that there has to be accountability,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd someone that is actually taking responsibility for what the police does invest in to. And that doesn\u2019t exist in this moment. And I do believe that the current charter that we have, that\u2019s tied the hands of those who want to have that accountability, because we are mandated to have a specific amount of policing, we are mandated to, you know, have the kind of these union contracts that we have right now.
