Phil Murphy and his Republican challenger, Jack Ciattarelli.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy now leads Ciattarelli by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/11\/02\/us\/elections\/results-new-jersey.html?name=styln-2021-elections&amp;region=TOP_BANNER&amp;block=storyline_menu_recirc&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=LegacyCollection&amp;variant=show&amp;is_new=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">about 7,000 votes<\/a> out of over 2.3 million cast, inching ahead with nearly 90% of the votes in after trailing for almost all of Tuesday as late-reporting, urban counties tally their votes. If Murphy wins it will be by a far narrower margin than his 14-point win in 2017 and President Joe Biden\u2019s 16-point win just a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>If Murphy wins re-election, he would be the first Democrat to do so since former Gov. Brendan Byrne in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.org\/former-governors\/new-jersey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1977<\/a>, and he would do so in a state where registered Democrats outnumber their Republican counterparts by around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.nj.us\/state\/elections\/assets\/pdf\/svrs-reports\/2021\/2021-10-voter-registration-by-congressional-district.pdf\">1.1 million people<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/02\/glenn-youngkin-terry-mcauliffe-virginia-governor-election-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Youngkin Beats McAuliffe, Clinching First Statewide Win In Virginia For Republicans Since 2009)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7314127\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"33\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7314127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New Jersey Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli prepares to speak at his watch party on Tuesday. (Spencer Platt\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Both candidates said that they expected to win early Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve sent a message to the entire nation,\u201d Ciattarelli told a crowd of supporters. \u201cThis is what I love about this state: Every single time it\u2019s gone too far off track, the people of this state have pushed, pulled and prodded it right back to where it needs to be.\u201d <strong><a class=\"text-black\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/03\/house-gop-campaign-arm-adds-13-democratic-seats-target-list\/\">(RELATED: \u2018No Democrat Is Safe\u2019: House GOP Campaign Arm Adds 13 Democratic Seats To Target List)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen every vote is counted, and every vote will be counted, we hope to have a celebration,\u201d Murphy said.<\/p>\n<p>In Virginia, Glenn Youngkin <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/02\/glenn-youngkin-terry-mcauliffe-virginia-governor-election-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">upset Terry McAuliffe<\/a> late Tuesday, becoming the first Republican to win statewide since 2009.
