Ilhan Omar voted Tuesday to abolish the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), she announced on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>If <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/02\/americans-are-heading-to-polls-across-the-country-here-are-biggest-races\/\">enacted<\/a>, City Question 2 would <a href=\"https:\/\/minnesota.cbslocal.com\/2021\/10\/21\/minneapolis-ballot-guide-controversial-public-safety-ballot-question\/\">abolish<\/a> MPD and replace it with a Department of Public Safety. The Department of Public Safety would \u201cemploy a comprehensive public health approach to the delivery of [its] functions,\u201d according to the referendum question. It \u201ccould include police officers, but the minimum funding requirement would be eliminated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar claimed that the amendment \u201cputs control of Minneapolis\u2019 public safety in the hands of residents\u201d and \u201cwould not eliminate police.\u201d Although the amendment does not require the elimination of police, it would allow the city council to do so. The current Minneapolis City Charter requires 0.0017 police officers per resident. Residents later <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/10\/20\/minneapolis-residents-sue-city-defund-police-crime-surge\/\">sued<\/a> the city after a massive crime spike, leading a Hennepin County District Court judge to order Minneapolis to hire more police officers. The funding cuts forced the police department <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/02\/judge-minneapolis-police-department-george-floyd\/\">below<\/a> the legally-mandated officer-to-civilian ratio. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/02\/minneapolis-car-jackings-dismantle-police\/\"><strong>(RELATED: Six Months After Minneapolis Pledged To Dismantle The Police, Residents Grapple With Triple Digit Increase In Carjackings)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Omar, the whip for the Congressional Progressive Caucus, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/20\/house-democrats-barely-pass-bill-bolstering-capitol-security-after-progressive-defections\/\">voted<\/a> against allocating funds to the Capitol Police Department for increased overtime and new gear in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. She also ripped Barack Obama when the former president <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/02\/squad-blasts-obama-against-defund-police-slogan-ilhan-omar-rashida-tlaib-ayanna-pressley\/\">criticized<\/a> the political effectiveness of the \u201cDefund the Police\u201d slogan.<\/p>\n<p>Omar has also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/01\/ilhan-omar-the-mpd-is-a-joke\/\">described<\/a> MPD as \u201ca joke,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IlhanMN\/status\/1381672082367422467?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1381672082367422467%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthehill.com%2Fhomenews%2Fhouse%2F547869-tlaib-us-policing-intentionally-racist-cant-be-reformed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claimed<\/a> that \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">violence is a basic part of police interactions with communities of color.<\/span>\u201c<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic Minnesota Rep.
