Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told the Senate sergeant-at-arms to retake the Senate chamber during the January 6 riot by using the guns that they were issued to protect Senators.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/interactive\/2021\/what-happened-trump-jan-6-insurrection\/\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>The Senate and House leaders also had been evacuated by Capitol Police and taken to an undisclosed location, but many lawmakers remained in their chambers for a few minutes before they were led to safety in the Hart Senate Office Building. Sen. Lindsey O. Graham was irate that senators were forced to flee their own chamber. He yelled at the Senate sergeant-at-arms. \u201cWhat are you doing? Take back the Senate! You\u2019ve got guns. Use them.\u201d The South Carolina senator was adamant. \u201cWe give you guns for a reason,\u201d he repeated. \u201cUse them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The revelation was made in the second part of The Washington Post\u2019s three-part investigation into the January 6 riot. The second part of the investigation was titled, \u201cBloodshed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham\u2019s office later confirmed that the quotes were \u201caccurate\u201d in a statement to Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGraham was quite clear on this point, noting that the backpacks and other items brought into the Capitol could have contained bombs and explosives,\u201d Kevin Bishop, Graham\u2019s communications director, said. \u201cThe damage could have been much, much worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham also reportedly called Trump\u2019s older daughter, Ivanka Trump, and gave her suggestions for what needed to happen as the chaos was unfolding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to get these people out of here,\u201d Graham reportedly told her. \u201cThis thing is going south. This is not good. You\u2019re going to have to tell these people to stand down. Stand down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day after the January 6 riot, Graham said that he was \u201cembarrassed and disgusted\u201d by the events of that day and that Sergeant of Arms of the Senate should resign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone in charge of defending the Capitol failed in their duties,\u201d Graham <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/blog\/transcripts\/lindsey-graham-press-conference-on-capitol-riot-transcript-january-7\">said<\/a>. \u201cIf they would have been in the military, they had been relieved of their commands and most likely court-martialed. So the first thing that has to happen is to hold those accountable for failing to defend the nation\u2019s Capitol while the Congress was in session. Why am I worried?
