Democrat Mayor Jenny Durkan issued an executive order Friday, granting bonuses for new hires up to $25,000 depending on their experience and skill levels.<\/p>\n<p>However, the police union fired back at Durkan for the move while suggesting the city betrayed its loyal police officers after violent protests over the death of George Floyd. The union added, the staff shortage was caused by the \u2018defund the police\u2019 movement and worsened by the city\u2019s vaccine mandate.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few months ago, the mayor claimed she was focused on police response amid rising crime in the city.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cSo we are focused on two things: number one is to make sure we have the adequate police response we need when police are needed and two is to continue our work community-based strategies to interrupt this violence,\u201d she stated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>President Donald Trump and other Republicans have criticized Mayor Durkan in the past, specifically over Seattle\u2019s police-free autonomous zones. <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) even went as far as to offer out-of-state <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">police<\/span> who move to Florida bonuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cNYPD, Minneapolis, <\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Seattle<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">, if you\u2019re not being treated well, we\u2019ll treat you better here,\u201d stated the Republican. \u201cYou can fill important needs for us and we\u2019ll compensate you as a result.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, t<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">he <\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Seattle<\/span> <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Police<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> Department reportedly doesn\u2019t have enough cops to meet daily minimum staffing in any precinct across the city.
