Notable exceptions are the latest \u201cMy Hero Academia\u201d and the new Wes Anderson pic \u201cThe French Dispatch.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>First place still went to the bigger budget and wider release Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet film. In its second weekend in theaters, \u201cDune,\u201d which is also available on HBO Max, grossed an additional $15.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Although down a steep 62%&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/entertainment-business-arts-and-entertainment-movies-north-america-3e474098606628bce485993fe83ee9b3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">from its debut<\/a>, the ticket sales were enough to give it one more week atop the North American charts.<\/p>\n<p>With a production budget of $165 million (not including marketing and promotion), \u201cDune\u201d has now grossed $69.4 million in North America and $292.1 millon globally.&nbsp;Warner Bros. and Legendary last week confirmed plans to go ahead with a sequel&nbsp;that is expected to open exclusively in theaters in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalloween Kills,\u201d in its third weekend, placed second with $8.5 million. The penultimate film in this modern trilogy has now grossed $115.1 million globally.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Edgar Wright\u2019s \u201cLast Night in Soho,\u201d meanwhile, opened in sixth place. Playing on 3,016 screens, the stylish thriller distributed by Focus grossed an estimated $4.2 million. Thomasin McKenzie stars as a modern-day fashion student who at night dreams increasingly realistic dreams of Anya Taylor-Joy\u2019s aspiring singer in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are few bigger champions of the theatrical experience than Edgar and we couldn\u2019t be prouder he has made Focus his home,\u201d said Lisa Bunnell, Focus\u2019 president of distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Cooper\u2019s \u201c&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/film-reviews-entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-movies-horror-movies-a7f80963461ac30a58f13b5f5b9b5946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">Antlers<\/a>,\u201d about a mythical beast terrorizing a blighted Oregon town, also earned an estimated $4.2 million from 2,800 locations. The Searchlight-distributed horror stars Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, we hoped for a little more but we went up head to head against \u2018Last Night in Soho,\u2019 another really good genre film,\u201d said Frank Rodriguez, Searchlight\u2019s head of distribution. \u201cThey may have cancelled each other out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s optimistic going forward since next weekend\u2019s big releases include the Princess Diana film \u201cSpencer\u201d and the Marvel epic \u201cEternals,\u201d and \u201cAntlers\u201d has a different audience.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>One of the brighter spots of the weekend was \u201c&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/film-reviews-entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-movies-bill-murray-5a4e429fa2652425243875c1cfbfe789\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">The French Dispatch<\/a>,\u201d also distributed by Searchlight, which expanded after a limited debut and made $2.8 million from only 788 total locations. In 10 days of release, it\u2019s made $4.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still ecstatic about it,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see art house theaters who haven\u2019t seen numbers like this in 18 months finally starting to see people coming out \u2026 We are helping to open up the doors to art house and specialty theaters.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Although the weekend was muted, October has become the highest grossing month of the year with total grosses expected to net out around $625 million. The previous high-water mark came in July with $583.8 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOctober became a blockbuster month by virtue of the unusual nature of the pandemic. So many big movies moved into October,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. \u201cIt surpassed July. That never happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Things aren\u2019t quite back to \u201cnormal\u201d yet. For comparison, total grosses in pre-pandemic October 2019 were around $781.6 million and in 2018 were $830.8 million. But, Dergarabedian said the robust October 2021 box office has created a momentum that should continue through the end of the year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis sets up a final three months of the year that feel more like summer than summer did in 2021,\u201d he added. \u201cAudiences follow the movie no matter what month they\u2019re in. The movies define the month \u2014 the month doesn\u2019t define the movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
