class=\"subheading\">President Emmanuel Macron has warned that if Britain doesn\u2019t succumb to French demands on post-Brexit fishing licenses within 24 hours, then France will go forward with trade war-style threats in the English Channel.<\/p>\n<p>Despite initial reports on Sunday suggesting that the United Kingdom and France had agreed to de-escalate tensions, the two sides now appear to have no intention of backing down.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>France has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/10\/28\/france-detains-uk-fishing-boat-threaten-export-ban-on-british-fish\/\">threatened<\/a>&nbsp;to cut off energy to the Isle of Jersey, block British fishing boats from French ports, and increase import checks on British ships and lorries, should Boris Johnson fail to grant even more licences to fish in British waters to French trawlers.<\/p>\n<p>Britain, for its part, has claimed that the boats in question have not demonstrated a history of fishing in the region prior to Brexit and therefore have no right to access the lucrative fisheries.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters in Rome, Macron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/macron-gives-britain-ultimatum-in-fishing-row-005pbdp3s\">said<\/a> per <em>The Times<\/em>: \u201cThe ball is in Britain\u2019s court,\u201d adding that \u201cIf the British make no movement, the measures of November 2 will have to be put in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Johnson, who has suggested that if the French were to enact such measures then the entire European Union would be in violation of the Brexit agreement, said: \u201cOn fish, I\u2019ve got to tell you the position is unchanged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The already heightened tensions were escalated further last week, after a leaked letter from French prime minister Jean Castex said that the British should be punished for Brexit, telling EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that&nbsp;Britain\u2019s exit from the EU should be \u201cmore damaging than remaining\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the letter in Rome, Johnson said: \u201cI must say I was puzzled to read a letter from the French Prime Minister explicitly asking for Britain to be punished for leaving the EU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just have to say to everybody I don\u2019t believe that that is compatible either with the spirit or the letter of the Withdrawal Agreement or the Trade and Cooperation agreement, and that\u2019s probably all I\u2019ll say about that one,\u201d he added weakly.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The letter from the French prime minister has also been taken as confirmation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2020\/09\/17\/boris-criticises-abusive-eu-for-not-negotiating-in-good-faith\/\">long-held beliefs<\/a> among some in the British government that the European Union is not negotiating in \u201cgood faith\u201d in terms of the Northern Ireland protocol.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement on&nbsp;Ulster (Northern Ireland) \u2014 an integral part of the United Kingdom \u2014 has seen&nbsp;the establishment of border checks on goods between the British province and the rest of the United Kingdom, in large part administered by the EU.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The checks have resulted in disruptions to intra-UK trade, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/04\/08\/leaders-call-for-calm-after-days-of-northern-ireland-violence\/\">food shortages<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/04\/08\/leaders-call-for-calm-after-days-of-northern-ireland-violence\/\">violent protests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s Brexit negotiator, Lord David Frost,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidGHFrost\/status\/1454460923922591744\">wrote<\/a> on social media that he hopes the opinion that the UK should be punished for Brexit shared in the French letter are \u201cnot held more widely across the EU\u201d and that the UK may be forced to launch legal proceedings under the Brexit agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see it expressed in this way is clearly very troubling and very problematic in the current context when we are trying to solve many highly sensitive issues, including on the Northern Ireland Protocol,\u201d Lord Frost added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>On top of the threats made by the French,&nbsp;a British fishing vessel was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/10\/28\/france-detains-uk-fishing-boat-threaten-export-ban-on-british-fish\/\">detained<\/a>&nbsp;off the French fishing port town of Le Havre on Wednesday in an apparent retaliatory strike against the UK. French courts have reportedly demanded that the trawler pay&nbsp;\u00a3125,000 bail in order to be released.<\/p>\n<p>With Monday being a bank holiday in France, the ship will likely be stuck in the port until at least Tuesday. A crew member of the vessel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10148829\/France-demands-125-000-ransom-release-British-fishing-trawler-impounded-Le-Havre-port.html\">told<\/a> the <em>Mail on Sunday<\/em>: \u201cWe\u2019ve been told we are not leaving this weekend. We just want to get out of here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trawler, owned by&nbsp;Scotland\u2019s&nbsp;Macduff Shellfish, has been accused by the French of not having a valid licence because of updates to the boat\u2019s engine.
