Surveillance footage from the area showed \u201ca person on a skateboard threw gray paint on the face and base of a statue of George Floyd,\u201d according to the New York Police Department\u2019s hate crimes Twitter account. The account announced October 25 that Beals had been arrested and charged with the crime.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/george-floyd-statue-defaced-with-paint-in-new-york-city\">reported<\/a>, the statue was part of Confront Art\u2019s \u201cSEEINJUSTICE\u201d exhibition, which also featured two other statues, all of which were opened to the public last Friday evening. The Floyd statue was defaced with paint around 10 a.m. Sunday morning, according to the New York Police Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s video footage police were able to ascertain,\u201d detective Frances Sammon <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.cnn.com\/cnn\/2021\/10\/03\/us\/george-floyd-bust-defaced-confront-art\/index.html\">told<\/a> CNN. \u201cThey show a male ducking down under one of the statues. He then mixes something together, and, as he skates away, he throws a container of paint at the statue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers quickly gathered to remove the paint. Andrew Cohen, co-founder of Confront Art, said the statue was already being cleaned by the time he arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey went to the hardware and bought supplies out of their own pockets,\u201d he told CNN. \u201cThis is inspiring teamwork and support from the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of those volunteers, Harmony Seaburg, told the outlet that cleaning the statue was \u201cvery emotional\u201d for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really hard to see this larger-than-life man like this,\u201d Seaburg said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to get all the paint off his face, but it\u2019s very emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Floyd became a household name on May 25, 2020, after he died following an attempted arrest by Minneapolis police officers. Ex-police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years for the murder of Floyd.
