The French government has already threatened to take such actions unilaterally, however, has so far seen minimal support in Brussels.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"14.270516717325\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The reason some in Europe wish to punish  for Brexit and quell \ud83c\uddf5\ud83c\uddf1 dissent is simple.<\/p>\n<p>The EU is not, and never has been, about sovereign nations cooperating freely where their interests align.<\/p>\n<p>It has always been about a slow march to ever closer union and centralised control.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bruges Group  (@BrugesGroup) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrugesGroup\/status\/1454377710009176064?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 30, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>France has accused the British government of withholding fishing licenses for French boats to fish in Britain\u2019s lucrative fisheries in the English Channel and off the coast of Jersey. The UK, for its part, has claimed that the vessels denied licences did not have a history fishing the waters in question prior to Brexit and therefore should not be granted access following Britain\u2019s official departure from the EU.<\/p>\n<p>In response,&nbsp;France has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/10\/28\/france-detains-uk-fishing-boat-threaten-export-ban-on-british-fish\/\">threatened<\/a> to use time-consuming border checks on British products in order to exacerbate supply chain issues. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/french-are-breaking-brexit-deal-in-fishing-dispute-says-boris-johnson-m5kmq8q7s?utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1635575793\">report<\/a> in <em>The Times<\/em>, the captain of the boat has been charged by the French with unauthorised fishing and could face a criminal trial and fines of up to&nbsp;\u20ac75,000 (\u00a363,000\/$86,000).<\/p>\n<p>The owner of the boat, Scotland\u2019s&nbsp;Macduff Shellfish, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2021\/10\/29\/britain-must-punished-brexit-says-france\/\">told<\/a><em> The Telegraph<\/em> that it was operating within the law at the time of the detention, with director&nbsp;Andrew Brown saying that it may have come as a result of an&nbsp;\u201cextremely technical rule\u201d over engine upgrades which could have been resolved with a \u201cphone call\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Following the detention of the fishing vessel and the increase of \u201cconfrontational language\u201d, Britain\u2019s Foreign Office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/europe-minister-summons-french-ambassador\">summoned<\/a> French Ambassador&nbsp;Catherine Colonna on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the British government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson has taken a notably softer line in the dispute than their French counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Brexit minister Lord David Frost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-59100410\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the European Commission the UK could launch \u201cdispute settlement proceedings\u201d if France follows through with its threats.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Ahead of a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the G20 summit in Rome on Saturday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that he will do \u201cwhatever is necessary\u201d to defend British interests in the fishing dispute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe fear that there may be a breach of the terms of the trading co-operation agreement implicit in what\u2019s happening, in some of the things that are being said, and obviously we will stand by to take the appropriate action,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>Brexit leader Nigel Farage has called on the government to take a harder line, suggesting that the next time a British ship is seized by the French, then the UK should \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Nigel_Farage\/status\/1453660167904583680\">do the same<\/a>\u201d the next time a French boat enters within six miles of the British coast.<\/p>\n<blockquote
