Terry McAuliffe\u2019s (D) campaign sought to \u201ckill\u201d a story Thursday about McAuliffe paying Democrat election lawyer Marc Elias\u2019s firm nearly $54,000 in the final weeks of Virginia\u2019s gubernatorial election.<\/p>\n<p>McAuliffe campaign staffer Christina Freundlich&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/team-mcauliffe-emails-reveal-effort-to-kill-this-fox-news-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;in an email response, \u201cCan we try to kill this,\u201d to a Fox News reporter \u2014 seemingly as a mistake \u2014 when the reporter reached out to her Thursday about the nature of the $53,680 payment, which McAuliffe\u2019s financial disclosures&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vpap.org\/committees\/156114\/raw-reports-out\/?schedule=D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reveal<\/a>&nbsp;was made to the Elias Law Group on October 14.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Freundlich then followed up with another email,&nbsp;\u201cTo dispute the challenges of the election,\u201d and made no other comment to Fox News on the record. In August 2021, Elias&nbsp;<a title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/08\/22\/democrat-election-lawyer-russia-hoaxer-marc-elias-leaves-perkins-coie-ahead-of-durham-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;he was leaving his current firm, Perkins Coie, to form his own law group, where he continues to do legal work for a range of prominent Democrats, including, apparently, McAuliffe.<\/p>\n<p>Elias has also been a key individual in the ongoing investigation by special counsel John Durham of the FBI\u2019s probe into alleged Trump-Russia collusion. The attorney, while at Perkins Coie, was hired by Hillary Clinton in 2016 to conduct opposition research against then-candidate Donald Trump that resulted in the infamous Steele dossier. Elias had denied his involvement in the dossier, but the&nbsp;<em>Washington Post<\/em>&nbsp;countered his denials in a 2017 investigative&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/clinton-campaign-dnc-paid-for-research-that-led-to-russia-dossier\/2017\/10\/24\/226fabf0-b8e4-11e7-a908-a3470754bbb9_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"23\">\n<p>The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier containing allegations about President Trump\u2019s connections to Russia and possible coordination between his campaign and the Kremlin, people familiar with the matter said.<\/p>\n<p>Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research.<\/p>\n<p>After that, Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community, according to those people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Because of Elias\u2019s history of pursuing election rule changes, as well as his history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/2020-election\/2021\/02\/03\/democrat-lawyer-marc-elias-claims-faulty-voting-machines-in-new-york-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenging<\/a> close elections on behalf of Democrats, Jonathan Turley, an attorney at George Washington University, <a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/10\/28\/terry-mcauliffe-hires-controversial-ex-clinton-lawyer-marc-elias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested<\/a> McAuliffe could \u201cbe preparing to challenge any win by\u201d his opponent, Republican Glenn Youngkin.<\/p>\n<p>McAuliffe was however&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?514638-1\/terry-mcauliffe-glenn-youngkin-debate-time-virginia-governors-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a> during a gubernatorial debate on September 16 if he would accept the election results if the state certified that he had lost. McAuliffe replied, \u201cSure.
