The funding will further empower the FTC under Chair Lina Khan, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/24\/lina-khan-federal-trade-commission-facebook-apple\/\">looked<\/a>&nbsp;to expand the agency\u2019s scope and has pushed for more aggressive antitrust and consumer protection enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>While Democrats have previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markey.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/markey-joins-blumenthal-colleagues-call-for-historic-ftc-rulemaking-on-consumer-privacy-civil-rights-and-cyber-security-safeguards\">urged<\/a> the FTC to craft stronger data privacy laws, some Republicans are wary of the proposal and the direction of the FTC under Khan. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/01\/lina-khan-federal-trade-commission-republican-jim-jordan-darrell-issa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018Radical And Partisan\u2019: Republican Concern Is Growing Over Lina Khan\u2019s FTC Overhaul)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalf a billion dollars is still a sizable war chest,\u201d Sean Kelly, spokesman for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers who serves as Ranking Member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. \u201cThis funding will just be used to consolidate power at the Commission so the Democrats can advance their political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7114922\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"36\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7114922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rep. Roger Wicker and FTC Commissioner Noah Phillips in late September to write an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/op-eds\/ftc-must-leave-privacy-legislating-to-congress\">op-ed<\/a>&nbsp;criticizing proposals for the FTC to enact privacy protections through \u201cexecutive rulemaking,\u201d arguing instead for Congress to pass federal data privacy legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Khan has drawn the ire of Phillips and fellow Republican Commissioner Christine Wilson, who in Congressional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/public_statements\/1596880\/commissioner_wilson_hearing_on_reviving_competition_part_4_-_21st_century_antitrust_reforms_and_the.pdf\">testimony<\/a>&nbsp;argued that Khan was \u201ctearing down\u201d the FTC\u2019s \u201crich bipartisan tradition\u201d by cutting off minority commissioners from access to certain information. The Republicans castigated Khan for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FTCPhillips\/status\/1452738512600588299\">issuing<\/a>&nbsp;a rule change earlier this week without allowing them to issue a simultaneous dissent.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jim Jordan, ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/01\/lina-khan-federal-trade-commission-republican-jim-jordan-darrell-issa\/\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the DCNF earlier this month that Khan has \u201cmade it clear she will use the FTC to advance President Biden\u2019s agenda in the name of economic \u2018inequality\u2019 and socialism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Democrats\u2019 proposal also follows <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/13\/facebook-frances-haugen-big-tech-mark-zuckerberg\/\">testimony<\/a> from former Facebook employee Frances Haugen who called for the creation of a \u201cdedicated oversight body\u201d to serve as a \u201cregulatory home\u201d for former social media employees to oversee privacy matters, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Though national privacy legislation has long been a topic of discussion on Capitol Hill, with several laws proposed, a comprehensive data privacy standard has yet to be passed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress should be coming together to enact national privacy standards and ensure all Americans are protected equally,\u201d Kelly told the DCNF. \u201cThe Democrats\u2019 proposal lacks direction from Congress and accountability or recourse for how these funds may be used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
