Before taking on this role, Maves <a href=\"https:\/\/tennesseeconservativenews.com\/new-decision-maker-in-tn-dept-of-education-believes-math-is-tool-of-white-oppression\/\">served<\/a> as Deputy Superintendent for Instruction and Measurement for the California Department of Education, the Tennessee Conservative&nbsp;noted Wednesday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" state\u2019s controversial revision of its mathematics framework, one that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/08\/25\/research-cited-to-show-california-math-is-racist-often-misrepresented\/\">seeks<\/a> to train K-12 math teachers that \u201cwhite supremacy culture infiltrates math classrooms in everyday teacher actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> reported in May, Maves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/education\/article\/California-s-new-math-war-Should-schools-be-16163580.php\">supported<\/a> the California department\u2019s recommendation to push Algebra 1 out of middle school and delay access to that course until high school, which would eliminate the tracking of students into accelerated math programs in middle school.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe reject ideas of natural gifts and talents,\u201d the California Math Framework draft asserts.<\/p>\n<p>President of the California Board of Education Linda Darling-Hammond denied the delay would lead to fewer students taking calculus in high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does present the research that the rush to calculus without the depth of understanding is not beneficial to long-term math (achievement),\u201d she told the <em>Chronicle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Maves also defended the delay in teaching higher-level math.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of this is based on a misunderstanding and misconception of what we\u2019re trying to accomplish here, which pushes against traditional notions and thinking,\u201d she said. \u201cThe importance and outcome of math is providing a depth of understanding around mathematical concepts, not necessarily how quickly can we get to the top.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote teachers\u2019 workbook&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/equitablemath.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/1_STRIDE1.pdf\">titled<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cA Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction: Dismantling Racism in Mathematics Instruction\u201d states:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p>In order to embody antiracist math education, teachers must engage in critical praxis that interrogates the ways in which they perpetuate white supremacy culture in their own classrooms, and develop a plan toward antiracist math education to address issues of equity for Black, Latinx, and multilingual students.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ze\u2019ev Wurman, a research fellow at the Independent Institute and a former senior policy advisor at the U.S. Education Department, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.org\/publications\/article.asp?id=13698\">wrote<\/a> in August the California Mathematics Framework [CMF] draft \u201cpromotes the idea that, in general, students should not be accelerated based on their actual performance in math.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wurman elaborated:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8.5588235294118\">\n<p>The research support for this argument is&nbsp;very <a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/sci\/347\/6219\/262.full.pdf?casa_token=MLZyFTBnqKUAAAAA:ppYUmkL1fE8Ln4BNjCvQ99XLmJS9m4upgAhKAnlNxLQYINPk5q6Cm2wizV59dVR-noeQOUnb55R1yRJ-\">weak<\/a>&nbsp;so to bolster it, the draft of CMF uses the&nbsp;case <a href=\"https:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/opinion-how-one-city-got-math-right\/\">study<\/a> of San Francisco Unified District&nbsp;(SFUSD) that implemented an essentially uniform assignment of math courses to all its students since 2015 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nctm.org\/uploadedFiles\/Standards_and_Positions\/Work-to-End-Tracking-and-Offer-Four-Years-of-Meaningful-Final.pdf\">claims<\/a>&nbsp;an improvement in overall math achievement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Wurman analyzed the data from the SFUSD and ultimately determined that, \u201csince the program change more students take the easier statistics and fewer take the more demanding calculus as their culminating high school math course.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSFUSD does not provide a breakdown of student score on the AP [Advanced Placement] exams so it is impossible to judge whether the scores on them have improved or deteriorated since the program change,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>After a review of California\u2019s Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) testing, which is aligned with the Common Core State Standards, Wurman found the claims of success of delaying Algebra I until high school \u201cdo not survive scrutiny and are the result of changing passing criteria, likely driven by the wish for the new program to look successful, rather than on any actual student success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted further:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>Yet even if such a miraculous improvement were true, it would mean little since it certainly did not translate into actual performance improvement in higher level mathematics. All SFUSD reported as \u201csuccess\u201d was prior to the first students under the new program reaching their senior year, and did not include their actual performance on objective\/external assessment beyond reporting enrollment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.4140969162996\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Three math scholars warn China is successfully rising as the world\u2019s STEM leader while U.S. schools prioritize woke social justice and &#8220;diversity.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wsSMqUiwQQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/wsSMqUiwQQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews\/status\/1435392082676490241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 7, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Richard Bernstein also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearinvestigations.com\/articles\/2021\/07\/14\/research_used_to_justify_californias_racial_equity_math_doesnt_add_up_784966.html\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;at RealClear Investigations in July, the research cited in the California Math Framework draft claiming math is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/04\/15\/california-weighs-equitable-math-goal-obtaining-correct-answer-racist\/\">racist<\/a>\u201d revealed results that have actually been misrepresented by the woke activists behind the framework.<\/p>\n<p>The framework, which could be adopted in 2022, makes the claim its assertions are based on \u201cthe latest, seemingly unimpeachable findings of advanced social science research,\u201d Bernstein observed, elaborating:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14\">\n<p>Phrases such as \u201cresearchers found,\u201d \u201cthe research shows\u201d and the \u201cresearch is clear\u201d are sprinkled through the Framework, which states unequivocally: \u201cThe research is clear that all students are capable of becoming powerful mathematics learners and users.\u201d If true, this evidence would provide a powerful rationale for adopting the Framework\u2019s proposals, which, given California\u2019s size and prestige, is commonly seen as a model for other states.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bernstein found, however, much of the research cited is actually not \u201cclear\u201d at all. In fact, he described it as \u201cactually pretty murky, hotly disputed, or contradicted by other research, misleadingly stretched to cover situations for which it was not intended, or, in some instances, just plain wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that Maves has a top post in the Tennessee Department of Education, some parents are concerned, reports the Tennessee Conservative:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>One Tennessee parent learned of this fact and sent a letter to Senator Janice Bowling (R-Tullahoma) stating, \u201cWhy did the Tennessee Department of Education hire Rachael Maves from California when she proposed eliminating advanced math due to inequities?&nbsp; This is anti-American and anti-God.. in that He gave us gifts and talents, and we need to stop Californicating our Tennessee with her and Penny Schwinn who hired her.&nbsp; Please address this during the Special Session.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>State Sen. Bowling reportedly replied she was shocked by the information about Maves and would forward it to the chairmen of several committees with legislative oversight.<\/p>\n<p>Bowling added she would also forward the information to Gov. Bill Lee\u2019s (R) staff who could flag it for Commissioner of Education, Penny Schwinn.<\/p>\n<p>Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/05\/25\/tennessee-gov-bill-lee-signs-bill-ban-teaching-critical-race-theory\/\">signed<\/a> a bill into law in May banning the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in schools throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis topic was not included in the call for the Special Session,\u201d Bowling reportedly said. \u201cWe can address it administratively immediately. We passed legislation last session prohibiting any of the tenets of CRT.
