Television product claim ads must include the brand and generic name, at least one Food and Drug Administration-approved use and the \u201cmost significant risks,\u201d according to the FDA website. &nbsp;Pfizer, the only vaccine manufacturer that has received FDA approval for use in people 16 years and older, has plans to market its vaccine. The side effects for COVID-19 vaccines available in the U.S. are all publicly available.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CSAM0XzFgIi\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=c937863e-5179-4caa-88c1-085d8c81223d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social media users<\/a> are claiming there have been no television commercials for COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S. because the pharmaceutical manufacturers are obligated to list potential side effects in such advertisements. \u201cThere are no TV commercials in the U.S. for the [<a href=\"https:\/\/emojipedia.org\/syringe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">syringe emoji<\/a>] because by law they have to list the side effects,\u201d reads one such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CVRj1dRrRfH\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=d805650d-d2bf-47e3-b157-91ee9915a5cc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram post<\/a>. \u201cFact Check that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While none of the companies that have produced a COVID-19 vaccine available in the U.S. have advertised their vaccines on television, it is not because they fear disclosing the side effects of the vaccines. A list of side effects for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/144414\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pfizer-BioNTech<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/144638\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moderna<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/146305\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/a> COVID-19 vaccines have been and are all publicly available on the FDA\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-first-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">approved<\/a> for use in people 16 years and older, while the Moderna and Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccines are authorized by the FDA for emergency use. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/150386\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letters<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/144636\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/146303\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">authorization<\/a> for the emergency use authorizations lay out conditions related to \u201cprinted matter, advertising, and promotion,\u201d including that \u201cdescriptive printed matter, advertising, and promotional material\u201d relating to their use must clearly state they have \u201cnot been approved or licensed by FDA, but has been authorized for emergency use by FDA.\u201d With full approval, the vaccine companies \u201ccan advertise on TV and promote their products under the watchful eye of the FDA,\u201d former FDA commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/fda-leadership-1907-today\/robert-califf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Califf<\/a> told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/05\/18\/covid-vaccines-what-full-fda-approval-means-for-you.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ads that name the drug and discuss its benefits and risks are required to give both the brand and generic name, as well as at least one FDA-approved use and the \u201cmost significant risks,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/prescription-drug-advertising\/basics-drug-ads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FDA website<\/a>. Television ads specifically must present the drug\u2019s \u201cmost important risks\u201d in audio and include \u201ceither all the risks listed in the drug\u2019s prescribing information or a variety of sources for viewers to find the prescribing information for the drug,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/prescription-drug-advertising\/basics-drug-ads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FDA website<\/a> explains.<\/p>\n<p>Now that Pfizer\u2019s vaccine has been approved by the FDA for use in people 16 years of age and older, the company has plans to advertise it under the brand name Comirnaty, <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/2059769\/pfizer-is-planning-to-advertise-its-covid-19-vaccine-comirnaty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quartz<\/a> reported.
