Katie Porter stood near her gas-powered minivan while using candy and rice as props during a House hearing on \u201cBig Oil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Porter laced into fossil fuel industry officials, using the props to show how much money the companies spend on oil and gas production compared to renewable alternatives and how much federal land they control for drilling. While Porter criticized the executives and their companies, she stood near a gas-powered minivan which she used to carry rice bags for her demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you lobby and sue so that you can take more of our public land, you\u2019re saying too much is never enough,\u201d Porter stated toward the end of her remarks on Thursday. \u201cThe American people are tired of this charade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The California Democrat was referencing the fossil fuel industry\u2019s opposition to President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/27\/executive-order-on-tackling-the-climate-crisis-at-home-and-abroad\/\">executive order<\/a> banning all new oil and gas leases on federal land. A federal judge blocked the Biden administration\u2019s action, however, and ordered it to continue leasing federal lands.<\/p>\n<p>During her questioning, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/10\/01\/katie-porter-white-board-salary-celgene\/\">Porter<\/a> held up a grain of rice and said it represented an acre of public land. She then opened her minivan\u2019s trunk, revealing multiple bags of rice which she said depicted the total acreage oil and gas companies controlled for drilling purposes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already have 13.9 million acres. This is equivalent to Maryland and New Jersey combined,\u201d Porter said, raising her voice. \u201cHow much more do you need?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She then opened one of the bags of rice and poured its contents out. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/27\/democrats-ro-khanna-carolyn-maloney-oversight-committee-big-oil-disinformation\/\">(RELATED: Democrats To Begin Year-Long Investigation Into Big Oil \u2018Disinformation\u2019 Campaign)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The House Oversight Committee hearing marked the beginning of what Subcommittee on the Environment Chair Ro Khanna <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/27\/democrats-ro-khanna-carolyn-maloney-oversight-committee-big-oil-disinformation\/\">said<\/a> would be a year-long investigation into \u201cBig Oil\u2019s\u201d alleged decades-long disinformation campaign to hide facts about climate change from Americans. Khanna has likened the investigation and hearing to a 1994 probe into tobacco companies led by former Rep. Henry Waxman.<\/p>\n<p>Executives from <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/20\/exxon-mobil-oil-gas-projects-climate-change-environmentalists\/\">ExxonMobil<\/a>, BP America, Chevron, Shell Oil and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/19\/energy-independence-united-states-joe-biden-american-petroleum-institute\/\">American Petroleum Institute<\/a>, a trade group that represents the fossil fuel industry on Capitol Hill, appeared before the committee Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in her questioning, Porter used M&amp;M\u2019s to depict how little Shell Oil had committed to renewable energy compared to fossil fuels. She said the $2-3 billion that Shell said it would put toward renewables and other energy solutions was \u201cgreen washing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongresswoman, what I can tell you is that there needs to be both a demand and a supply of clean energy which is why we\u2019re working very closely with our customers so that that demand increases over time,\u201d Shell Oil President Gretchen Watkins responded before Porter interrupted her.<\/p>\n<p>Committee Republicans, meanwhile, criticized Democrats for their behavior during the hearing and repeatedly defended the officials who were called to testify.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI apologize to our witnesses that were called and asked to take part in this today,\u201d Republican Rep.
