The claim appears to have stemmed from a satirical news website.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The image shared on Instagram appears to show part of a tweet dating back to February 2016 that features a photo of coins cascading into a large container. \u201cSamsung pays Apple $1 Billion Fine by sending 42 trucks full of Pennies,\u201d reads text included in the image. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/08\/16\/fact-check-apple-scanning-extremist-firearms-iphones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: No, This Headline About Apple Scanning Phones For \u2018Extremist Content And Firearms\u2019 Is Not Real)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The post appears to be referencing a private settlement that, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2018\/06\/27\/apple-samsung-settle-after-seven-years-court-battles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post<\/a>, the two companies reached after Apple successfully filed a lawsuit against Samsung for infringing Apple patents. A federal court found Samsung guilty of the charges in August 2012 and ordered the company to pay Apple $1 billion in damages, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/25\/technology\/jury-reaches-decision-in-apple-samsung-patent-trial.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a>. The 100 billion pennies Samsung would need to pay $1 billion would take about 77 percent of those 130 billion in circulation.<\/p>\n<p>The viral claim appears to have stemmed from the satirical <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eldeforma?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mexican<\/a> news website <a href=\"https:\/\/eldeforma.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">El Deforma<\/a>, which published an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120829001555\/https:\/\/eldeforma.com\/2012\/08\/27\/samsung-paga-multa-de-1-billon-de-dolares-a-apple-en-monedas-de-5-centavos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> making a similar claim days after the initial August 2012 court ruling against Samsung.
