McDonald\u2019s didn\u2019t disclose financial terms for either transaction.<\/p>\n<p>The Apprente technology uses AI to understand drive-thru orders. This summer, McDonald\u2019s tested the tech in a handful of Chicago restaurants. Kempczinski said that the test showed \u201csubstantial benefits\u201d to customers and employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my mind, IBM is the ideal partner for McDonald\u2019s given their expertise in building AI-powered customer care solutions and voice recognition,\u201d McDonald\u2019s CEO Chris Kempczinski said during the company\u2019s most recent earnings call.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mcdonalds-is-testing-voice-automated-drive-thrus-in-wake-of-15-minimum-wage-proposals\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported in June, executives foresee the technology appearing across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a big leap between going from 10 restaurants in Chicago to 14,000 restaurants across the U.S. with an infinite number of promo permutations, menu permutations, dialect permutations, weather \u2014 I mean, on and on and on and on,\u201d said Kempczinski. \u201cDo I think in five years from now you\u2019re going to see a voice in the drive-thru? I do, but I don\u2019t think that this is going to be something that happens in the next year or so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first tests of the automated system occurred as federal lawmakers sought increases to the minimum wage. Today, however, the economy is gripped by rampant labor shortages.<\/p>\n<p>Between April 2021 and August 2021, the economy created a net 2 million new jobs. Nevertheless, overall employment is still 3% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/20-million-americans-left-their-jobs-between-april-and-august\">lower<\/a> than pre-recession levels.<\/p>\n<p>As employers compete for a diminished pool of available labor, many are instead relying upon technology. Morning Consult\u2019s Small Business Recovery Survey \u2014 which surveyed 608 small to midsize businesses between August 5 and August 16 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/3-in-10-small-businesses-have-automated-jobs-amid-nationwide-worker-shortage\">found<\/a> that roughly three in ten have turned to automation.<\/p>\n<p>The labor shortage is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/zillow-halts-home-buying-spree-due-to-construction-labor-shortages\">triggering<\/a> high prices in other sectors.
