Zakaria did not mention that the strikes <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kelloggs-cereal-plants-strike-d9185eb8fa9054d34a078063c3db6c33\">halted<\/a> production at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/10\/15\/1046519755\/more-than-10-000-factory-workers-for-farm-equipment-maker-john-deere-are-on-stri\">both<\/a> companies, leaving farmers scrambling for equipment and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/business-news\/john-deere-strike-and-supply-chain-woes-has-farmers-worried-rcna3207\">paying tens of thousands of dollars more<\/a> for used tractors than in years past.<\/p>\n<p>But the U.S. shortage, which resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/jolts.nr0.htm\">10.4 million unfilled jobs<\/a>, goes beyond organized labor to throngs of Americans temporarily quitting their jobs or permanently leaving the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost workers in the U.S. are not unionized, so they may not be inclined to organize a strike. But that doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t walk off their jobs,\u201d said Zakaria. \u201cSince April, an average of about four million workers have quit their jobs every month. It is a trend economists have called the Great Resignation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>August\u2019s \u201cquit rate\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/20\/global-shortage-of-workers-whats-going-on-experts-explain.html\">4.3 million<\/a> people is the highest in at least two decades, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/20\/6-reasons-why-americans-arent-returning-to-work.html?recirc=taboolainternal\">3.6 million<\/a> more unemployed Americans say they are not looking for a job compared to pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n<p>That has significantly impacted employees, the employers who pay them, and the consumers who buy their products. Americans who have not taken part in the Great Resignation must work longer, and harder, to pick up the slack for an understaffed business.<\/p>\n<p>The average worker in manufacturing works nearly an hour-and-a-half more overtime now compared to last April. The combined marginal tax rate for workers making $50,000 Canadian ($40,500 U.S.) is higher in any Canadian province than in all 50 U.S. states, according to a 2020 study from Canada\u2019s Fraser Institute.Economic data show that higher wages have not attracted enough job applicants. Instead, in numerous industries hourly wages rose, employment fell, and the price charged to consumers rose.
