Text inside the viral image alleges, \u201cThis is the Hubble Telescope, this is a satellite,\u201d while the caption includes hashtags that reference the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/11\/16\/us\/flat-earth-conference-conspiracy-theories-scli-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">baseless flat-Earth conspiracy theory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, contrary to the post\u2019s claim, the top photo doesn\u2019t show the Hubble Space Telescope, a joint project between NASA and the European Space Agency, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/hubble\/team\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA\u2019s website<\/a>.&nbsp;Nor does the bottom photo depict a satellite. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/03\/17\/fact-check-first-ever-photo-sunset-mars-illustration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Is This Image The \u2018First Ever\u2019 Photo Of A Sunset On Mars?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The top image, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/images\/content\/471422main_ED10-0182-01_full%20_full.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted on NASA\u2019s website<\/a>, shows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/images\/content\/471422main_ED10-0182-01_full%20_full.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy<\/a>, also known as SOFIA. The aircraft, a modified Boeing 747SP, carries a \u201c2.7-meter (106-inch) reflecting telescope (with an effective diameter of 2.5 meters or 100 inches),\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/SOFIA\/overview\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA\u2019s website<\/a>. It flies into the stratosphere, allowing astronomers to \u201cstudy the solar system and beyond in ways that are not possible with ground-based telescopes,\u201d NASA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/SOFIA\/overview\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">further explains online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom picture, which does not show a satellite, can be found in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/elizabethhowell1\/2019\/07\/05\/google-affiliated-company-sends-high-altitude-balloon-aloft-for-223-days\/?sh=5ea2ec0f7edf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019 Forbes article<\/a>, where the caption indicates the photo, credited to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/alphabet\/introducing-project-loon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Loon<\/a>, is actually a \u201chigh-altitude balloon\u201d meant to provide Internet service. Loon, a Google-affiliated company, and Telkom Kenya deployed roughly 35 balloons to facilitate Internet access in Kenya, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telkom.co.ke\/telkom-and-loon-announce-progressive-deployment-loon-technology-customers-july\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2020 Telkom Kenya press release<\/a>. Loon\u2019s CEO announced <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.x.company\/loon-draft-c3fcebc11f3f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a January 2021 blog post<\/a> that the company was shutting down.<\/p>\n<p>Pictures of the Hubble Space Telescope <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/hubble\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can be found<\/a> on NASA\u2019s website, while photos of various satellites <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/photos\/satellite-space?assettype=image&amp;license=rf&amp;alloweduse=availableforalluses&amp;family=creative&amp;phrase=satellite%20space&amp;sort=mostpopular\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can be seen<\/a> on Getty Images.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image\u00a0shared on Instagram purportedly shows the Hubble Space Telescope and a satellite.
