That wasn&#8217;t an empty threat: According to a now-deleted version of the student affairs website, Cosgrove&#8217;s remit involves the bar exam&#8217;s &#8220;character and fitness&#8221; investigations, which review aspiring lawyers&#8217; disciplinary records in considerable detail.<\/p>\n<p>Eldik&#8217;s profile is no longer viewable on any Yale Law website, though he remains <a href=\"https:\/\/dhr.yale.edu\/discrimination-and-harassment-resource-coordinators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">listed<\/a> as a &#8220;discrimination and harassment resource coordinator&#8221; with the university. An <a href=\"https:\/\/law.yale.edu\/about-yale-law-school\/office-dean\/officers-administration\/ellen-m-cosgrove\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entry for Cosgrove<\/a>\u2014which contains no mention of her &#8220;character and fitness&#8221; duties\u2014is still viewable on the law school&#8217;s main website. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211018220734\/https:\/\/yaleconnect.yale.edu\/ylsosa\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archived web pages<\/a> indicate that the profiles were scrubbed between Oct. 13 and Oct. 18.<\/p>\n<p>Debra Kroszner, a spokeswoman for the university, said the &#8220;profile page for the Office of Student Affairs was temporarily taken down to protect staff members who have been receiving threatening emails and phone calls.&#8221; But contact information for both Eldik and Cosgrove remains publicly available on the university&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/dhr.yale.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> for &#8220;discrimination and harassment concerns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both administrators came under fire after the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/listen-to-yale-law-school-administrators-tell-a-student-his-affiliation-with-the-federalist-society-is-triggering-for-classmates\/\">published audio<\/a> of their conversations with Colbert. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/how-yale-law-school-pressured-a-law-student-to-apologize-for-a-constitution-day-trap-house-invitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">likened<\/a> Eldik and Cosgrove&#8217;s veiled threats to a mafia shakedown. &#8220;That&#8217;s a nice legal career you&#8217;ve got ahead of you,&#8221; FIRE&#8217;s Aaron Terr limned the exchange. &#8220;Would be a real shame if something happened to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Atlantic<\/em>\u2018s Conor Friedersdorf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/10\/yale-law-diversity-bureaucrats-made-five-mistakes\/620428\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> that &#8220;the behavior of Yale Law&#8217;s diversity bureaucrats was unethical, discreditable, and clearly incompatible with key values that the elite law school purports to uphold.&#8221; And the <em>Washington Post<\/em>\u2018s Ruth Marcus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/10\/14\/yale-law-school-party-invitation-trap-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Cosgrove and Eldik&#8217;s language was &#8220;reminiscent of the Cultural Revolution,&#8221; a comparison that Yale Law School&#8217;s Asian-American affinity group <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/yale-law-school-students-to-media-what-the-actual-f\/\">called<\/a> &#8220;offensively racist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Professors at Yale Law School were likewise aghast at the administrators&#8217; conduct. Roberta Romero, a professor of corporate law, <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/convulsions-at-yale-law-school-administrators-do-damage-control-as-faculty-members-slam-schools-dishonesty\/\">threatened<\/a> to &#8220;correct the record&#8221; if the law school did not admit to having punished protected speech.
