Terry McAuliffe and Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin set for their final week of campaigning.<\/p>\n<p>McAuliffe, a Democrat who held the post from 2013-2017, leads Youngkin by 2.1 points in FiveThirtyEight\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/governor\/virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">average<\/a>, and by just 1.8 points in RealClearPolitics\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2021\/governor\/va\/virginia_governor_youngkin_vs_mcauliffe-7373.html#polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tracker<\/a>. While McAuliffe was considered a wide favorite for much of the race given Virginia\u2019s move leftward over the past decade, recent polls have shown him and Youngkin tied.<\/p>\n<p>Also a factor is President Joe Biden\u2019s declining approval rating in the state. He campaigned with former President Barack Obama Saturday and is set to do the same with Biden Tuesday, and has tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TerryMcAuliffe\/status\/1452372324959854595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tie Youngkin to Trump<\/a> in a bid to turn off swing voters.<\/p>\n<p>Youngkin, however, focused heavily on education in the past month, contrasting himself with McAuliffe\u2019s comments <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/28\/terry-mcauliffe-glenn-youngkin-parents-schools\/\">criticizing parents<\/a> trying to influence what their kids learn in school. He also is on-record opposing vaccine mandates, though he has encouraged Virginians to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Forecasters have said that the race may serve as a national bellwether ahead of the 2022 midterms, and that a McAuliffe loss could be an ominous prelude of what lies ahead for Democrats.
