(Jane Tyska\/Bay Area News Group via AP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 4:38 PM PT \u2013 Friday, October 22, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>A retired Oakland Police captain is recovering after being shot during an attempted robbery.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, authorities confirmed Ersie Joyner had undergone surgery and is in stable condition in the ICU. Officials said Joyner was pumping gas at a Chevron station when he was approached by three individuals who tried to rob him at gun point.<\/p>\n<p>A struggle ensued before Joyner pulled out his own gun and opened fire, killing one of the suspects. Two of the suspects then returned fire, injuring the former captain.<\/p>\n<p>Oakland\u2019s Chief of Police Leronne Armstrong stressed the surge in crime is sweeping the Democrat-led city.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Oakland Police Department will hold a media availability regarding Thursday\u2019s robbery and shooting that resulted in a homicide. We\u2019ve seen so many tragic situations. We\u2019ve seen so many people lose their lives as a result of violence.
