Nearly three-quarters of students support vaccine mandates, and about 80 percent support mask mandates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/blog\/press\/2021\/09\/20\/survey-finds-72-percent-of-college-students-support-vaccine-mandate-on-campus-mask-mandate-support-at-near-80-percent\/\">according<\/a> to a September Kaplan survey.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, students have filed federal lawsuits against their schools over the vaccine mandates. Those lawsuits may run aground, however.<\/p>\n<p>In August, a federal appeals court <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-courts-education-indiana-coronavirus-pandemic-eb1408814f3d3c7921fa371675f8c617\">ruled<\/a> in favor of Indiana University\u2019s vaccine requirement, and that decision has already been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/universities-face-student-lawsuits-over-covid-19-vaccine-mandate-11628242202\">cited<\/a> in some of the other cases. Eight students sued Indiana University over the mandate, saying it violates their constitutional rights by forcing them to get medical treatment they do not want.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 schools have implemented a vaccine mandate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/blogs\/live-coronavirus-updates\/heres-a-list-of-colleges-that-will-require-students-to-be-vaccinated-against-covid-19\">according<\/a> to the Chronicle of Higher Education.<\/p>\n<p>Other COVID-19 safety policies that have prompted complaints from students are schools\u2019 surveillance of them and restrictions on when students can leave and return to campus.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Albion College, a liberal arts college in Michigan with only 1,500 students, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/09\/02\/college-forces-students-to-download-location-tracking-covid-19-app\/\">prompted<\/a> outrage from students and their parents when it announced that students would have to use a location-tracking app called Aura in order to come back to campus. The app is built to track students\u2019 location even when they are off-campus and contains the student\u2019s COVID test results as well. If the student tests positive, the app would alert people the student was recently near.<\/p>\n<p>Parents launched a petition against Albion\u2019s \u201cextremely invasive\u201d rules that garnered nearly 2,000 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Some students at the University of Southern California feel that the school\u2019s COVID rules are \u201coverreach,\u201d the Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/covid-19-precautions-prompt-backlash-on-college-campuses-11634376600\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About 95 percent of USC students are vaccinated, but they still need to get tested once a week for COVID in order to come on campus. Security guards reportedly mill around telling students to keep their face masks on.<\/p>\n<p>Some schools have backed down on things like vital signs sensors for students after students protested.<\/p>\n<p>At Oakland University in Michigan, students and their families <a href=\"https:\/\/oaklandpostonline.com\/32739\/campus\/biobuttons-become-optional-after-public-outcry\/\">protested<\/a> the school\u2019s proposal that they wear a \u201cbio button\u201d that monitored a student\u2019s heart rate, temperature, and respiration.
