He asserted the subpoena for former White House strategist Steve Bannon is invalid.<\/p>\n<p>While speaking from a Capitol Hill press conference on Thursday, McCarthy said this is the latest attempt by Democrats to silence conservatives. However, shortly after his remarks, the House\u2019s majority decision gave the controversial subpoena the green-light.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GOPLeader?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GOPLeader<\/a> Kevin McCarthy on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/January6thCmte?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@January6thCmte<\/a> holding Steve Bannon in contempt for defying a subpoena: &#8220;They&#8217;re issuing an invalid subpoena.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/329iPWqNl3\">pic.twitter.com\/329iPWqNl3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CSPAN (@cspan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cspan\/status\/1451225062640693260?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 21, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bannon is under scrutiny because his lawyer told the January 6 committee he would not comply with their subpoena, saying he had the right to withhold confidential information as a White House official. According to McCarthy, the January 6 panel\u2019s refusal to first let him defend his claim in court exposes dark intentions.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy suggested cases like Bannon\u2019s are why Republicans have called for a balanced panel since the beginning. The committee has seven Democrats and just two anti-Trump Republicans, all hand-picked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy went on to say the committee\u2019s focus on targeting political opponents is very different from what they promised it to be earlier this year.
