It comes almost a month after the select committee <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/23\/trump-january-6-riot-meadows-bannon\/\">first subpoenaed Bannon<\/a> over his communications with Trump about their efforts to overturn the election, an insistence with which Bannon has refused to comply on the grounds of executive privilege.<\/p>\n<p>The 229-202 contempt vote included eight Republicans voting in favor, even as GOP leadership urged its caucus to vote against it, and came two days after the committee <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/19\/jan-6-committee-clears-way-steve-bannon-held-contempt-of-congress-face-criminal-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unanimously recommended<\/a> holding Bannon in contempt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting to the truth of what happened or placating the ego of a former president, that shouldn\u2019t be a tough call,\u201d said Rep. Jim McGovern, a Democrat from Massachusetts and the chair of the House Rules Committee. \u201cWe have fewer more important and solemn duties than what is at the heart of the measure before us today. (Roberto Schmidt\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The committee also subpoenaed former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former Defense Department chief of staff Kash Patel, but they have been \u201cengaging\u201d with the committee thus far. Members of the committee have portrayed Bannon as central to Trump\u2019s plans to overturn the election, seeking his testimony and relevant records to piece together what happened on Jan. 6 and who may have been involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Bannon] must have been aware of, and may well have been involved in, the planning of everything that played out on that day,\u201d said Rep. Liz Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming and the committee\u2019s vice chair. \u201cThe American people deserve to know what he knew and what he did.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/08\/20\/steve-bannon-brian-kolfage-indicted-border-wall-nonprofit\/\">(RELATED: Steve Bannon Indicted For Allegedly Defrauding Crowdfunded Border Wall Donors)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other Republicans, however, argued ahead of the vote Thursday that Democrats\u2019 focus was misguided and that they should instead subpoena the D.C. National Guard and former Sergeant at Arms about miscommunications that led to the attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[This] is another investigation in search of a crime,\u201d said Minnesota Republican Rep. Michelle Fischbach, the Rules Committee\u2019s ranking member.<\/p>\n<p>Other Republicans were more blunt in their remarks. \u201c[Democrats] are weakening the power of Congress by issuing an invalid subpoena,\u201d said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the widespread Republican opposition, the committee said that it was determined to get to the bottom of what led up to Jan. 6. President Joe Biden\u2019s administration also waived executive privilege rights to an array of documents involving many of Trump\u2019s former aides, his adult children and former First Lady Melania Trump, days before Trump himself <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/18\/donald-trump-sues-jan-6-committee-national-archives-capitol-riot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sued the committee<\/a> in an attempt to stop their investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Bannon\u2019s and Mr. Trump\u2019s privilege arguments do appear to reveal one thing, however,\u2019\u201d Cheney added at the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey suggest that President Trump was personally involved in the planning and execution of January 6th.
