Retail sales are through the roof,\u201d Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/therecount\/status\/1449724166811398150\">said<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/17\/pete-buttigieg-biden-economy-supply-chain-crisis\/\">during an interview<\/a> Sunday. \u201cAnd if you think about those images of ships, for example, waiting at anchor on the West Coast \u2013 every one of those ships is full of record amounts of goods that Americans are buying because demand is up because income is up because the president has successfully guided this economy out of the teeth of a terrifying recession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than half of American adults said an item they recently shopped for was out of stock while 54% encountered the same issue online shopping, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/15\/holiday-shopping-supply-chain-morning-consult\/\">according<\/a> to a Morning Consult survey published Friday. The problems facing the supply chain have been most apparent in California, where busy shipping ports have seen delays and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/19\/trucking-company-dumps-empty-shipping-containers-on-suburban-streets-near-clogged-california-ports\/\">cargo backlogs<\/a>, The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/cargo-delays-are-getting-worse-but-california-ports-still-rest-on-weekends-11632648602\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg explained that the U.S. supply chain \u201ccan\u2019t keep up\u201d with surging demand for goods and services across the economy. President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/06\/08\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-supply-chain-disruptions-task-force-to-address-short-term-supply-chain-discontinuities\/\">issued<\/a> an executive order in February directing federal agencies to expand efforts \u201cstrengthening the resilience of critical supply chains\u201d while Buttigieg and Vice President Kamala Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/10\/13\/readout-of-virtual-roundtable-on-collective-efforts-to-address-global-supply-chain-bottlenecks\/\">convened<\/a> a meeting on Oct. 13 with private and public sector <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/10\/13\/fact-sheet-biden-administration-efforts-to-address-bottlenecks-at-ports-of-los-angeles-and-long-beach-moving-goods-from-ship-to-shelf\/\">officials<\/a> to discuss potential remedies.<\/p>\n<p>Economists, though, rejected both Buttigieg\u2019s claim that supply chain issues were connected to the administration\u2019s policies and that Biden\u2019s economic policies have been successful to begin with.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u2018It certainly doesn\u2019t feel like abundance\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t the first time that we\u2019ve had increases in our shipment activity,\u201d Casey Mulligan, former White House Council of Economic Advisers chief economist and a University of Chicago professor, told the Daily Caller News Foundation in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had some really big increases before and the consumer didn\u2019t notice because it wasn\u2019t a screwed up system,\u201d he continued. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/19\/proctor-gamble-raise-prices-transportation-material-costs\/\">(RELATED: Procter And Gamble To Raise Prices Of Popular Goods Citing Increasing Transportation And Material Costs)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the Trump administration, the number of containers that passed through Los Angeles, the nation\u2019s busiest port, hit multiple records, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portoflosangeles.org\/business\/statistics\/container-statistics\">according<\/a> to a city database. The number of annual containers peaked in 2018 when nearly 9.5 million were transported through Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 7.3 million containers by comparison have passed through the city\u2019s port this year, the data showed. The Biden administration&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/10\/13\/fact-sheet-biden-administration-efforts-to-address-bottlenecks-at-ports-of-los-angeles-and-long-beach-moving-goods-from-ship-to-shelf\/#:~:text=the%20port%20of%20los%20angeles%20is%20expanding%20to%2024%2F7%20operation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> last week that it had worked with local officials to expand the port\u2019s hours to 24 hours per day.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7305190\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"34\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7305190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cargo containers sit stacked on ships at the Port of Los Angeles on Oct. 15 in San Pedro, California. (Mario Tama\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The largest U.S. ports may even see a decline in imports compared to 2020&nbsp;because of massive congestion at docks, the National Retail Federation, which tracks national imports, <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/retail-imports-remain-high-could-be-higher-without-port-congestion\">said<\/a> on Oct. 7.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe net effect of President Biden\u2019s policies has probably been to worsen the supply disruptions to a certain degree,\u201d Brian Riedl, a senior fellow focusing on economic policy at the Manhattan Institute, told the DCNF. \u201cAnd that was by shooting a $1.9 trillion stimulus bill at an economy that was only $420 billion below its potential performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat, combined with unemployment provisions that kept people not working, contributed to a degree of overheating in the economy that is driving a lot of the supply disruptions,\u201d Riedl added.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/11\/joe-biden-signs-american-rescue-plan\/\">signed<\/a> the American Rescue Plan, which injected $1.9 trillion in additional coronavirus stimulus into the economy and extended pandemic-related unemployment benefits. (Drew Angerer\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Throughout the summer, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/07\/april-job-growth-expectations-joe-biden-white-house\/\">defended<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/17\/united-states-economy-unemployment-joe-biden-jobless-claims\/\">federal pandemic boost<\/a> given to out-of-work Americans, even as the nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/09\/labor-shortage-record-unemployment-united-states-economy-business\/\">labor shortage<\/a> worsened and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/08\/us-add-194000-jobs-september-miss-expectation\/\">job growth slowed<\/a>. Businesses struggling to find workers amid the economic recovery and economists <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/08\/unemployment-benefits-pandemic-main-street-small-business-recovery-foundation-for-government-accountability\/\">blamed<\/a> the expanded benefit. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/12\/record-4-3-million-people-quit-jobs-august-workers-see-opportunity-chaotic-labor-market\/\">(RELATED: Record 4.3 Million People Quit Their Jobs In August As Workers See Opportunity In Chaotic Labor Market)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe White House is going to emphasize the data that they want and they\u2019re going to spin global supply disruptions as proof of having an economy of abundance,\u201d Riedl continued. \u201cBut it certainly doesn\u2019t feel like abundance for the people who can\u2019t buy basic things off the shelves and are suffering from long lines and waits for items they need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mulligan added that the administration\u2019s reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/15\/retail-sales-beat-expectations-surging-inflation\/\">increasing retail sales<\/a> as evidence of its successful economic policies was misleading because of the potential impact inflation may have on those figures. Consumer prices have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/01\/august-inflation-federal-reserve-jerome-powell-janet-yellen\/\">surged<\/a> to multi-decade <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/14\/wholesale-inflation-record-high-supply-chain-disruption\/\">highs<\/a> over the last several months and are <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/18\/inflation-supply-chain-shortage-2022\/\">expected to continue<\/a> their upward trajectory into 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you see people spending more dollars, say at the grocery store, are they getting more groceries or are they getting the same groceries and paying more?\u201d Mulligan said.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
