(Gleb Garanich\/Pool Photo via AP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 6:52 AM PT \u2013 Tuesday, October 19, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>The U.S. signed a bilateral defense agreement with Georgia in order to provide \u201csecurity cooperation\u201d between the nations.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with his Georgian counterpart to sign an initiative that will continue U.S. support to Georgian defense forces over the next six years. Dubbed the <a href=\"https:\/\/ge.usembassy.gov\/fact-sheet-georgia-defense-and-deterrence-enhancement-initiative\/\">Defense and Deterrence Enhancement Initiative<\/a>, Austin said it represents a new phase between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to build upon the Georgia Defense Readiness Program by continuing institutional reform in the defense sector, by strengthening the capabilities and the capacities required for effective deterrence and defense,\u201d stated the U.S. official. \u201cAnd by fostering interoperability with NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m honored to join Minister Burchuladze in signing a Memorandum of Understanding on the Georgia Defense and Deterrence Enhancement Initiative.
