The former president was undergoing treatment for a urological infection that spread, apparently into the bloodstream, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/10\/17\/bill-clinton-released-from-southern-california-hospital-516151\">POLITICO<\/a>, which spoke to a Clinton aide. Officials told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/17\/us\/politics\/bill-clinton-released-hospital.html\">The New York Times<\/a>, on the condition of anonymity, that Clinton developed sepsis but did not go into septic shock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSepsis happens when an infection you already have triggers a chain reaction throughout your body,\u201d according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). \u201cInfections that lead to sepsis most often start in the lung, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. Without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clinton was released early Sunday, following five nights in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is in great spirits and has been spending time with family, catching up with friends, and watching college football,\u201d Clinton spokesman Angel Ure\u00f1a said in a statement Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton\u2019s hospitalization was reported earlier this week, and he reportedly spent time in the ICU \u2014 although an aide told Politico that he was not receiving ICU treatment, but rather, was simply in the ICU section of the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2021-10-17\/former-president-clinton-released-orange-county-hospital\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a>, Clinton was visiting Southern California to speak at a reception later in the week but was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center on Tuesday because he felt fatigued. His wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, ended up speaking at the event in his place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently, he was not feeling well all day Tuesday,\u201d said CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who said he spoke to Clinton\u2019s staff and doctors. \u201cHe was out in California for an event related to his foundation, was not feeling well, and was taken to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an infection that is now being treated with IV antibiotics,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd what they are saying is that he is responding well to those antibiotics.
