Dubbed in English for American viewers, it centers on a group of debt-ridden adults who are recruited by a shadowy organization to play children\u2019s games to the death in exchange for big payouts.<\/p>\n<p>As first reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/its-an-allegory-nkorea-website-says-squid-game-reflects-skoreas-beastly-society-2021-10-12\/\">Reuters<\/a>, state-run North Korean news outlet Arirang Meari said on October 12 that \u201cSquid Game\u2019s\u201d dystopian storyline warns of the \u201chell-like horror\u201d of capitalist cultures where \u201conly money matters,\u201d and added that in free-market nations \u201ccorruption and immoral scoundrels are commonplace.\u201d The article also claimed the show \u201cmakes people realize the sad reality of the beastly South Korean society in which human beings are driven into extreme competition and their humanity is being wiped out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the current South Korean society where the number of losers in fierce competition such as employment, real estate and stocks increases dramatically,\u201d the article said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting, however, that one of \u201cSquid Game\u2019s\u201d main characters is playing the games in order to earn enough money to help her family get out of North Korea \u2014 something that, given the show\u2019s popularity, may explain why the government there would have an interest in shifting focus to other elements of the plot.<\/p>\n<p>Openly highlighting a South Korean show is an unusual occurrence in North Korea, where citizens face <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1534751\/north-korea-reminds-citizens-watching-south-korean-tv-means-death\/\">fines, prison time, and even execution<\/a> for watching South Korean entertainment.
