Alex Mooney and David McKinley.<\/p>\n<p>West Virginia <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/12\/census-bureau-redistricting-data-new-maps-legal-challenges-elections-2022\/\">lost<\/a> one of its three seats following the 2020 census, and the new map approved by the state legislature creates a north district and a south district. Mooney immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allymutnick\/status\/1448688563080605696\">declared<\/a> his candidacy in the northern district, West Virginia\u2019s Second, and McKinley is expected to do so shortly. Republican Rep. Carol Miller will not face an incumbent primary challenger in West Virginia\u2019s new First District, which covers the southern half of the state.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"8.03515625\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NEW?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NEW<\/a>: The West Virginia legislature has passed a new congressional redistricting plan.<\/p>\n<p>The map will now go to Governor Jim Justice for approval. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mmk4vehYRx\">https:\/\/t.co\/mmk4vehYRx<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Q34n4iOVEw\">pic.twitter.com\/Q34n4iOVEw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Redistrict Network (@RedistrictNet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RedistrictNet\/status\/1448677841239957506?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 14, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI am excited to be running for re-election in the new First District of West Virginia,\u201d Mooney said in a statement. \u201cOur nation now more than ever needs fighters who stand toe-to-toe with the radical left who are attempting to turn America into a socialist nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mooney was first <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2014\/11\/07\/democrats-went-down-big-in-west-virginia-on-election-night\/\">elected<\/a> to Congress in 2015, while McKinley has held office since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>McKinley had lobbied the state legislature to create an east-west split of the state, Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/10\/12\/west-virginia-redistricting-showdown-515774\">reported<\/a>. His current district, West Virginia\u2019s old First, included the state\u2019s northern panhandle, where McKinley lives. Mooney\u2019s current district, West Virginia\u2019s old Second, cut across the central portion of the state and included its eastern panhandle. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/27\/behind-scenes-fight-2022-election-gerrymandering-maryland\/\"><strong>(RELATED: An Inside Look At The Behind The Scenes Fight To Set The 2022 Election)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>McKinley argued that the two fastest-growing parts of the state, Morgantown and the eastern panhandle, should be split up. That plan would have pitted Mooney and Miller against each other, giving McKinley a safe seat and no incumbent challenger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we go from three to two, no matter how you split the pie, somebody\u2019s gonna be unhappy, probably,\u201d Republican state Del.
