The fund is a part of the Hillhouse Capital Group, a private equity firm operated by Chinese billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/lei-zhang\/\">Zhang Lei<\/a> and known for its early investments in some of China\u2019s top technology companies.<\/p>\n<p>Hillhouse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dealstreetasia.com\/stories\/ai-developer-yitu-technology-55m-series-c-hillhouse-capital-72704\/\">invested<\/a> $55 million in the Chinese surveillance firm Yitu Technology in 2017, a company that was later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/understanding-entities-listing-context-us-china-ai-competition\">placed<\/a> on the U.S. government\u2019s \u201centity list\u201d in 2019 for developing <a href=\"https:\/\/onezero.medium.com\/the-u-s-rubber-stamps-facial-recognition-systems-used-to-round-up-uighurs-in-china-595478547f86\">facial recognition<\/a> software specifically designed to detect Uyghurs. Being on the entity list, U.S. companies must obtain a special license before doing business with Yitu, according to the Center for Strategic &amp; International Studies.<\/p>\n<p>Kerry\u2019s investment in Hillhouse was first reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/kerry-owns-stake-in-chinese-investment-group-that-funds-company-blacklisted-for-human-rights-abuses\/\">Washington Free Beacon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kerry owns his stake in the investment fund through a trust, whose beneficiary is his wife, the Free Beacon reported. Kerry reported in his financial disclosure that he and his wife have no involvement in managing the investments in the trust.<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The revelation of Kerry\u2019s financial ties to the blacklisted Chinese facial recognition firm comes just weeks after the climate czar brushed off questions from a reporter about China\u2019s human rights abuses against the ethnic Uyghur population. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/22\/john-kerry-climate-china-uyghur-genocide-bloomberg\/\">(RELATED: John Kerry Brushes Off Question About Uyghur Genocide: \u2018Life Is Always Full Of Tough Choices\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly a priority of the Biden administration is really addressing climate, but it\u2019s not the only priority,\u201d Bloomberg reporter David Westin said during an interview with Kerry in late September. \u201cThere are other things as well, such as the Uyghur situation in the west. (Anna Moneymaker-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Kerry isn\u2019t the only person in President Joe Biden\u2019s orbit with financial ties to China. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/04\/hunter-biden-remains-tied-bhr-partners\/\"><strong>(RELATED: Hunter Biden Remains Financially Tied To Chinese Equity Firm That Invested In Sanctioned Facial Recognition Company, Records Show)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s son, Hunter Biden, continues to own a 10% stake in a Chinese private equity firm that invested in another Chinese facial recognition company, Megvii, that was also sanctioned by the U.S. government in 2019 for its alleged involvement in implementing \u201cChina\u2019s campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, and high-technology surveillance against Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other members of Muslim minority groups in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joe Biden pledged before and after his election victory in November that nobody in his family would have any business relationships with a foreign corporation or foreign company.
