John Curtis told the Daily Caller News Foundation in an interview. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to get Republican members of Congress comfortable talking about it, educated in the real facts and in the real science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In July, Curtis founded the House Conservative Climate Caucus, a first-of-its-kind caucus that has more than 70 GOP members. Chief among the groups\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/curtis.house.gov\/conservative-climate-caucus\/\">core beliefs<\/a> is that the climate is changing and humans have contributed to it through decades of global industrialization. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/13\/democrats-green-energy-electric-vehicle-union-workers-tax-credit\/\">(RELATED: Democrats Push For Green Energy Tax Credit Benefiting Union Workers In Budget)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But the caucus\u2019 members have proposed free market, \u201cAmerica first\u201d solutions to climate change in sharp contrast to Democrats\u2019 big spending ideas. The Green New Deal, which progressives in Congress unveiled in 2019, is <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/19\/democrats-alexandria-ocasico-cortez-reintroduce-green-new-deal\/\">composed of various proposals<\/a> to help the U.S. achieve net-zero emissions in the near term, which <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/02\/25\/green-new-deal-cost-households\/\">could cost Americans<\/a> as much as $65,300 per household.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7301215\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"33\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7301215\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer speaks during a rally about climate change issues near the U.S. Capitol on Sept. 13. (Drew Angerer\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a strong feeling that we\u2019re off track on our national dialogue and that the answer is right in front of us,\u201d Curtis added, noting that he represents the youngest congressional district in the country. \u201cIf I can\u2019t do it, we have no hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A whopping 92% of young people who voted for President Joe Biden said climate change was either a very or a somewhat important issue for them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/10\/06\/how-important-is-climate-change-to-voters-in-the-2020-election\/\">according<\/a> to an October 2020 Pew Research Center survey. Just under half of Millennial and younger Republican voters believe the government isn\u2019t doing enough to reduce the effects of climate change, a May 2020 Pew poll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2020\/06\/23\/two-thirds-of-americans-think-government-should-do-more-on-climate\/\">showed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere certainly is an America first, free market solution,\u201d House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Kevin Brady told the DCNF in an interview. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/12\/fossil-fuel-climate-change-oil-gas-renewable\/\">(RELATED: Vast Majority Of Top Fossil Fuel Companies Don\u2019t Plan On Abandoning Oil And Gas Anytime Soon: REPORT)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new thinking is: spur more technology and innovation to make affordable energy cleaner and then export America\u2019s technologies around the world to help the planet address and tackle this crisis,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat approach is the Republican approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"9.1504424778761\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As we enter the 117th Congress, I\u2019ll continue to look for and support innovative technology to combat climate change. Curtis said Congress needs to continue promoting free market policies that lead to such innovation.<\/p>\n<p>The Utah congressman has advocated for improving nuclear energy infrastructure, relying less upon Russian-imported natural gas (LNG) which he said is produced less cleanly than it is in the U.S., exporting LNG to coal-dependent nations and investing in carbon capture projects, a technology that removes carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere. Natural Gas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/resources\/environmental-impacts-natural-gas\">produces<\/a> half as much emissions as oil and natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis also said the government can do more to reduce emissions from hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a gas often found in cooling and refrigeration equipment. (Andrew Caballero-Reynolds\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In December 2020, former President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climate-hfcs-reduction\/aim-act#:~:text=On%20December%2027%2C%202020%2C%20the,Coronavirus%20Stimulus%20%26%20Relief%5D).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signed<\/a> the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act, which received Republican and Democratic support. The bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedy.senate.gov\/public\/2019\/10\/sens-kennedy-and-carper-file-legislation-to-save-jobs-during-phasedown-of-hydrofluorocarbons\">first introduced<\/a> by Republican Sen. John Kennedy in 2019, authorized the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to phase out HFC use over the course of 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/23\/biden-administration-environmental-protection-agency-greenhouse-gas-regulation\/\">unveiled<\/a> a series of HFC regulations earlier this month in accordance with the 2020 law. EPA Administrator Michael Regan <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EPAMichaelRegan\/status\/1441008575741059076\">said<\/a> it was a \u201cmajor step towards addressing the climate crisis.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/11\/flooding-climate-change-infrastructure-report\/\">(RELATED: Flooding Could Wipe Out 25% Of Critical Infrastructure: REPORT)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was some pretty significant climate legislation that reduces hydrofluorocarbons by 85%,\u201d Curtis told the DCNF. \u201cThat\u2019s substantial and I think part of the problem sometimes in the climate movement is we don\u2019t stop and celebrate our successes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats also reached an agreement earlier this month to include tax credits for carbon capture projects in their $3.5 trillion budget, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/exclusive-white-house-top-democrats-reach-deal-budget-bill-carbon-capture-credit-2021-10-01\/\">reported<\/a>, in line with legislation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicanleader.gov\/house-republicans-unveil-carbon-capture-legislation\/\">introduced<\/a> by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy last year that would bolster the technology. The bill would fund tree-thinning in wildfire-prone areas to reduce emissions caused by forest fires and invest in revegetation, a natural carbon capture method, in other areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill will support the economy by expediting the logging of damaged trees and enhancing revegetation projects,\u201d Ranking Member John Barrasso, one of the bill\u2019s sponsors, told the DCNF in a statement. \u201cThe ARCs Act will also reduce emissions and the threat of future fires by allowing for additional wildfire mitigation such as tree thinning in fire-prone forests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barrasso also wrote the Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/senate-bill\/512\/actions\">received overwhelming support<\/a> on both sides of the aisle and was signed into law in 2019. The bill supports the development of advanced nuclear reactors, a source of carbon-free energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t just be against everything,\u201d Alaska Sen. Dan Newhouse, who chairs the House Western Caucus, told the DCNF. \u201cConservation and conservatism go hand in hand. We believe in being wise stewards, smart stewards of the resources that we\u2019ve been given and blessed with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that we can accomplish having cleaner air and cleaner water and, at the same time, maintain our competitive edge,\u201d he added. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/08\/joe-biden-deb-haaland-massive-expansion-utah-monuments\/\">(RELATED: \u2018Devastating\u2019: Biden Ignores Lawmakers\u2019 Pleas, Orders Massive Expansion Of Utah Monuments)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last week, the House and Senate Western Caucuses <a href=\"https:\/\/westerncaucus.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/10.5.2021_western_conservation_principles_final.pdf\">released<\/a> a document signed by 13 senators and 27 congressmen, listing GOP conservation principles and policy ideas. The report was mainly in response to the Biden administration\u2019s conservation plan, but also laid out a series of proactive \u201ctime-tested, science-based practices\u201d the signatories said would improve the environment.<\/p>\n<p>In May, the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/biden-harris-administration-outlines-america-beautiful-initiative\">released<\/a> its \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d Initiative, setting the goal of conserving 30% of the nation\u2019s lands and waters by 2030. However, Western Caucus Republicans argued the plans outlined in the initiative \u201cring hollow\u201d since the U.S. likely already conserves 30% of its natural resources and what constitutes \u201cconservation status\u201d has yet to be defined.<\/p>\n<p>Newhouse said the Western Caucus based its report off the idea that people living closest to natural resources understand those resources \u201cbetter than anybody in Washington, D.C.\u201d The outlined principles support private and state property rights, suggesting the federal government shouldn\u2019t intervene on such lands even for the sake of conservation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7301224\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"34\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7301224\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7301224\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/GettyImages-1234754893-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"California firefighters walk among burning trees on Aug. 18 in the Plumas National Forest near Janesville, California.
