Snowden has denied having a Telegram account.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Snowden released classified documents to journalists in 2013 as an NSA contract worker, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/edward-snowden-interview\/edward-snowden-timeline-n114871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBC News<\/a>. The files detailed surveillance of Americans by U.S. government intelligence agencies, NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/09\/19\/761918152\/exiled-nsa-contractor-edward-snowden-i-haven-t-and-i-won-t-cooperate-with-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. Snowden was given permanent residency in Russia in 2020, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/usa-security-snowden-russia-int\/russia-gives-whistleblower-edward-snowden-permanent-residency-rights-idUSKBN2771Q3\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The image in the Instagram post shows an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/bhHFB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oct. 6 post<\/a> seemingly from the unverified Telegram channel <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/Uiop9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Edward_Snowden_Channel<\/a>. The Telegram channel\u2019s bio, like the bio of Snowden\u2019s verified <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Snowden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter account<\/a>, reads, \u201cI used to work for the government. Now I work for the public.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/Uiop9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Edward_Snowden_Channel<\/a> is no longer publicly accessible, having stated in its <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/Uiop9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first post<\/a>&nbsp;on Oct. 5 that the channel would be \u201cset to private\u201d seven days later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo all the corrupt powers within governments: I bear you personally ill will,\u201d the Telegram post reads in part. \u201cYou are merely a product of the system within which you are ensnared. You had a chance to get out but you stayed \u2013 Remember there is not a single misdeed in your life that I will not uncover and make public. Doubt me at your risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Snowden does not appear to be the author of the statement. A search of his verified <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%22To%20all%20the%20corrupt%20powers%20within%20governments%22%20(from%3ASnowden)&amp;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter account<\/a> turned up no similar statements. Nor did he mention such a thing in any <a href=\"https:\/\/edwardsnowden.substack.com\/?sort=search&amp;search=%22To%20all%20the%20corrupt%20powers%20within%20governments%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">articles<\/a> on the newsletter publishing platform Substack. A wider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Edward+Snowden+%22To+all+the+corrupt+powers+within+governments%22&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=nws&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiJsOm2jMjzAhXCgnIEHV1EB7YQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&amp;biw=1920&amp;bih=902&amp;dpr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">internet search<\/a> turned up no news reports crediting the statement Snowden.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Snowden <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Snowden\/status\/1446934275299979269\">stated<\/a> on Twitter on Oct. 9 that he does not have a Telegram account. When asked about it he replied, \u201cIf you see one, it\u2019s fake.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/09\/26\/fact-check-telegram-announce-apple-remove-app-phones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Telegram Announce Apple Will Remove Its App From Phones?)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The channel\u2019s Oct. 5 post called Telegram \u201cthe safest of all platforms,\u201d which contradicts <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%40telegram%20(from%3ASnowden)&amp;src=typed_query&amp;f=top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previous comments<\/a> Snowden has made on Twitter criticizing Telegram\u2019s security.
