Columbus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe initiated a New World genocide,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat\u2019s what he did. Beginning &nbsp;with him and what he set in motion what followed, the annihilation of every Indigenous person in Hispaniola, which was Haiti and the Dominican Republic today. That\u2019s what he did. He took slaves. He mutilated. He murdered. And we\u2019re gonna say \u2018slash\u2019 and honor him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gotta give the San Antonio Independent School District a little bit of credit because at least they added Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day along with it and that\u2019s a step in the right direction,\u201d Popovich pontificated. \u201cBut what the hell is Alamo Heights thinking? It\u2019s Columbus Day, that\u2019s why they\u2019re off on Monday? Maybe there is something I am missing, and I am ignorant. But it makes me feel like they\u2019re living in a phone booth. And they are educating our kids?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColumbus Day? And we\u2019re gonna honor that?\u201d he asked rhetorically. \u201cIt\u2019s no knock on Italian Americans. That\u2019s a silly argument. It\u2019s like saying, \u2018We should be proud of&nbsp;Hitler because we are German.\u2019 It makes no sense.&nbsp;It\u2019s about Columbus. It\u2019s not about Italian-Americans. And so, there are a lot of states that have come out and scratched Columbus Day and made it Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day. But in our city, are we that backward that we have school districts that do that? I am amazed. He\u2019s intentionally promoting racial animus.\u201d Whitlock wrote, \u201cI know no longer pretend Michael Brown was an innocent victim of police brutality. The facts do not support that bogus narrative. These facts were made public more than four years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why did San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich spend three minutes Sunday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2903815-gregg-popovich-talks-racial-injustice-on-anniversary-of-michael-browns-death\">promoting<\/a>&nbsp;a Michael Brown narrative debunked by a black president, a black attorney general and colorblind facts?\u201d Whitlock asked, adding, \u201cHas someone or some organization asked Popovich to irresponsibly spew racial conspiracy theories? Racial unrest and violence have rocked this country for two months. Why would Popovich agitate an already tense situation with lies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day after Trump\u2019s inauguration Popovich&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/2017\/1\/21\/14348464\/gregg-popovich-donald-trump-video-quotes-transcript-criticism\">stated<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019d just feel better if somebody was in that position that showed the maturity and psychological and emotional level of somebody that was his age. It\u2019s dangerous and it doesn\u2019t do us any good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May 2017, Popovich&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/2017\/5\/14\/15638134\/gregg-popovich-donald-trump-game-show-spurs\">doubled down<\/a>, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><em>But to this day I feel like there\u2019s a dark cloud, a pall over the whole country. It\u2019s got nothing to do with the Democrats losing the election. It\u2019s got to do with the way one individual conducts himself. And that\u2019s embarrassing. It\u2019s dangerous to our institutions, and what we all stand for and what we expect the country to be. But for this individual, he\u2019s in a game show. And everything that happens begins and ends with him. Not our people or our country; every time he talks about those things, it\u2019s just a ruse.
