(Merck &amp; Co. via AP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 10:38 AM PT \u2013 Monday, October 11, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>Drugmakers are seeking FDA authorization for the first oral antiviral medicine for treating COVID-19. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merck.com\/news\/merck-and-ridgeback-announce-submission-of-emergency-use-authorization-application-to-the-u-s-fda-for-molnupiravir-an-investigational-oral-antiviral-medicine-for-the-treatment-of-mild-to-moderate-c\/\">Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics announced Monday<\/a> that they submitted an application with the agency&nbsp;for emergency-use authorization of molnupiravir.<\/p>\n<p>The experimental medication, originally developed for treating influenza, is now demonstrating results in mild-to-moderate COVID-19 cases in at-risk adults. The drug could be made available to Americans by late this year and would be the first authorized oral antiviral medicine for the treatment of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The biotechnology company\u2019s focus revolves around emerging infectious diseases. It\u2019s known to market a treatment for Ebola.
