Rand Paul (R-KY) blasted his colleagues in Congress last week as the United States continues to approach $30 trillion in national debt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Following Congress\u2019 failure to raise the debt ceiling this summer, the federal government risked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/yellen-says-us-faces-recession-if-congress-does-not-raise-debt-ceiling\"><span>defaulting<\/span><\/a><span> on its obligations. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) offered Democrats a short-term deal that will fund the government through the end of 2021; meanwhile, Democrats are seeking to enact a $3.5 trillion social welfare budget that combines provisions of President Biden\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/nonpartisan-economists-say-bidens-infrastructure-plan-will-decrease-economic-growth\"><span>American Jobs Plan<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-american-families-plan-is-far-from-a-new-deal-economic-boon\"><span>American Families Plan<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Amid both developments, Paul delivered a speech on the Senate floor about the broader fiscal irresponsibility of federal lawmakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re rapidly approaching a milestone in our country, and it\u2019s not a good one \u2014 $30 trillion in debt,\u201d Paul said on Thursday. \u201cIsn\u2019t there some sort of ramification to so much borrowed money?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8x1Javlie7Y\"><span>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8x1Javlie7Y<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPeople are saying we\u2019re going to give you free college, free cars, free cell phones, free this, free that,\u201d Paul continued. \u201cEverything in life will be free; you won\u2019t have to work anymore. The problem is there are ramifications. Money doesn\u2019t grow on trees; money\u2019s got to come from somewhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Paul noted that the government\u2019s options include borrowing money, raising taxes, or printing more dollars \u2014 the latter of which creates \u201cthe insidious tax of inflation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cRight now, we\u2019re facing 5% inflation because of the massive borrowing that both parties instituted in the last year,\u201d he explained. \u201cThey decided that the result of the pandemic would be to close everything down, destroy the economy, and then give everyone free money\u2026 Both parties have a certain responsibility to this. At least some members of both parties.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Paul argued that more Americans will grow dependent upon \u201cfree stuff\u201d from the government as purchasing power erodes. \u201cThe allure of something for nothing \u2014 this is the allure of socialism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As an example of poor spending discipline, Paul pointed to several studies funded by the National Science Foundation \u2014 including a $1 million project that examined whether Japanese quail who used cocaine saw an increase in their sexual promiscuity. \u201cHow did we get to a $30 trillion debt? Because there\u2019s studies like that littered throughout the budget.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are spending money right and left.
