On Friday, the DHS released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2021\/10\/08\/dhs-terminate-border-barrier-contracts-laredo-and-rio-grande-valley\">statement<\/a> to announce it was canceling all remaining barrier contracts with the CBP\u2019s Laredo and Rio Grande sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the agency said it would conduct environmental research on areas where border wall construction did not start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnvironmental planning activities will cover projects funded with DHS\u2019s Fiscal Year 2018 to 2021 barrier system appropriations where construction had not started,\u201d the statement read.&nbsp; \u201cThese activities include additional biological, cultural, and natural resource surveys for project areas where no data have been previously collected. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>DHS officials vowed to implement other border security policies such as developing border technology and land ports of entry. The agency added previously authorized \u201cremediation projects addressing life, safety, environmental issues\u201d would not be impacted by the recent termination.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Consistent with the DHS border barrier plan, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBP?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CBP<\/a>, in coordination with the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USACEHQ?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@USACEHQ<\/a>, intends to cancel the remaining border barrier contracts located within the Laredo Sector and all border barrier contracts located in the Rio Grande Valley Sector. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZkI0vYnmWn\">https:\/\/t.co\/ZkI0vYnmWn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Homeland Security (@DHSgov) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DHSgov\/status\/1446590983639113729?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 8, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The announcement comes as Republican lawmakers have continued to slam the Biden administration for the lack of action at the border.
